…AS 11 CLAN HEADS RECEIVE CERTIFICATES OF RECOGNITION

Governor Udom Emmanuel of AkwaIbom State has tasked traditional rulers to maintain moral decency and decorum in their domains to attract development to the people. The governor gave the charge during the presentation of certificates of recognition to 11 Clan Heads in the State.
The Governor who was represented by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Hon. UdoEkpenyong advised the newly recognized Clan Heads to obey the Paramount Rulers who preside over Traditional Rulers Council at the Local Government level, stressing that they are certified agents of government at the grassroots and appealed to them not to foment trouble, but to report crimes and criminality to the approved government agencies for the law to take its course.
The Governor revealed that there are over 600 chieftaincy matters in court which he described as worrisome. He called on aspirants to traditional stools to opt for mediation by the relevant government departments to resolve the matter amicably, saying that the state government would soon embark on massive agricultural programme which would call for use of land by the government and appealed to Traditional Rulers to pacify their areas for development.
Governor Emmanuel emphasized that the synergy between the government and the traditional institution is strategic to strengthen and sanitized the grassroots for development. He thanked them for 2015 support and sued for-similar robust support as 2019 approaches.
The Chairman, State Council of Chiefs who is the Paramount Ruler of Ibeno, HRM EffiongBasseyArchanga in his remarks decried the abuse of privileges by some village and clan heads who arrogate undue powers to themselves and advised the traditional rulers not to impersonate their titles. The monarch stated that offenders would be sanctioned, advised the Clan Heads against insubordination and allied offences against Paramount Rulers, tasked them to protect government projects, programmes and policies by liaising effectively with their subjects, adding that village and clan council meetings should be regular to keep themselves abreast of happenings in their domains.
Responding on behalf of the newly certified Clan Heads, the Clan Head of Ubodung Clan in Urue-Offong/Oruko LGA, His Highness OffongAsuquoEtimUmium assured the government of peace in their domains and thanked the State Governor for finding them worthy to occupy their traditional stools, adding that whom much is given, much is also expected;and appealed to the State Government for improved welfare package, befitting palaces and cars for Clan Heads.
