A Bill for an Act to Establish the Maritime University of Nigeria, Oron and to Make Comprehensive Provisions for Due Management and Administration for the Related Matters has passed second reading on the floor of the House of Representatives.
The Bill, which was sponsored by the Itu/Ibiono Ibom Federal Constituency member, Hon. Dr. Henry Archibong has been widely accepted and highly commended owing to the fact that what the Bill sought to establish has been long overdue considering the long standing nature of the school.
The claims by the sponsor of the Bill to the effect that the school already have on ground, facilities for the upgrade was duly corroborated by a member who serves in the House Committee on Maritime Safety Education and Administration.
The Bill has however been referred to the House Committee on Tertiary Education as well as Committee on Maritime Safety, Education and Administration for further legislative action.
Similarly, Dr. Archibong has also presented a Matter of Urgent Public Importance on the floor of the House concerning the ongoing communal clash involving the people of Itu in Akwa Ibom State, on one hand and Ikot Offiong Community in neighboring Cross River state on the other hand. Following a new Rule in the House, specifically Order VIII Rule 4(3), the federal lawmaker will take the lead debate on the matter during the next legislative day, which is tomorrow, Wednesday 18th.
