‘End of the Wicked’: Electric Cable Thief Electrocuted In Eket



A suspected electricity cable thief was yesterday electrocuted in Eket. The thief who is yet to be identified though it was said to be Hausa man, died while trying to remove cable from a live 500kv substation.

Our correspondent gathered that one of the eye witnesses, Mr. Victor Ikpe Odungide, a community leader who is also residing in the area disclosed that the corpse of the alleged thief and all the lose armoured cables were noticed by the residents of the area and passers-by around after  torrential.

It was further gathered from the release signed by the Manager, Corporate Communications of Port-Hacourt Electricity Distribution Company, (PHEDC), Mr. Jonah Iboma, said the alleged thief met his untimely death inside Grace Bill 500kv substation, under Qua River 11kv feeder.
Iboma said that the vandal, in an attempt to cut 300mm single core armoured cable, died instantly when the line exploded resulting to his electrocution.Dismayed with the activities of vandalism within PHEDC network, Iboma stated that these activities plunges the company’s esteemed customers into unwarranted darkness, noting that PHEDC had lost millions of naira arising from this shameful acts.

He particularly condemned the wanton destruction of PHEDC installations by the vandals accounting for the loss of over 150 transformers and other accessories in the system.
Iboma further advised community leaders and members of the public to report anybody with suspicious movements around PHEDC installations especially at odd hours.
“You have to help us fight these vandals by stopping and reporting any suspicious movement around PHEDC transformers to law enforcement agents because if you ignore such report, you may be in darkness”, Iboma said.

Our correspondent further gathered during his visit to Eket Divisional Police Station along Eket/Oron Road for further investigation, that one Madam Audu Mohamed who is believe to be the deceased wife had reported the incident to the police around 11.00am on the date of the event and was recorded by the Police as a “Sudden and Unnatural Death”. Our correspondent who also visited Immanuel General Hospital Mortuary to trace the corpse also reported that the corpse was removed from the mortuary in a red Volvo station wagon by some Hausa men for burial perhaps in Uyo Cemetery in their traditional rite.
