This is a story of Master Felix Idoreyin Obong, a ten year old boy who hails from Afaha Itiat in Ibiono LGA of Akwa Ibom state.
The eyes being the window of the soul is a precious gift from God which enhances relationships and makes us understand the world around us, but this was not to be for Master Felix as at the tender age of just one, he was diagnosed of a rare eye disease ‘cataract’.
Master Felix who is the second child of his parents and a brilliant student of the Excellent Foundation Academy had been taken to various hospitals around the country to seek medical help, all to no avail. His father Mr. Idorenyin Obong recounts “Felix was diagnosed of cataract eye disease at the age of one, but could not be treated because most of the hospitals I took him to were saying he was too fragile to be handled and as such has been blind for the past ten years. It was difficult for me as each day went by because I could not imagine my boy growing up without being able to see.”
Mr. Obong stated that his faith that his son would one day see made him not to enroll Felix in a special school. " I always believed that one day my son will be able to see. That is why I did not enroll him in a special school, rather I opted for the normal school where he was taught the oral way." he remarked
Succor however came calling recently when the Family Empowerment and Youth Reorientation Program (FEYReP), a ‘not for profit’ platform of Mrs. Martha Udom Emmanuel in partnership with MTN foundation organized a 21 day free eye clinic comprising of surgeries (glaucoma and cataract ), reading glasses and medication .
Acting on information given to him by a relative about the free eye exercise, Felix’s father Mr. Idorenyin Obong took his boy to the programme with the believe that his son will gain his sight. Today courtesy of the Governor’s wife and MTN foundation, Master Felix Obong has gain his sight after being operated by Dr. Mildred, an optician with vast experience few days after the programme commenced.
In appreciation Mr. Obong Speaking during their ‘thank you’ visit to the Governor’s wife expressed their appreciation to Mrs. Martha Udom Emmanuel for initiating such a life-impacting programme in the state, admonishing all to always avail themselves opportunity.
It is on record that over two thousand people benefitted from the free eye programme, and so many testimonies abound.
