From the inception of his administration in 2007, Senator Godswill Akpabio declared his avowal to restore Akwaibom and her people to "the position our forebears took us in their era as the fourth largest tribe and as progenitors of modern Nigeria ". Such lofty ideals are anchored on his vision, dream and quest of Akwaibom as one people, with one heritage. That he has fulfilled this promise and pledge was affirmed by the spokesman of ibibio Nation, Air Commodore Idongesit Nkanga (Rtd), during the reception organized in his honour at Asan Ibibio(a dedicated and hallowed rendezvous of the ibibios).
In declaring the open endorsement of Chief Akpabio, on their (Ibibio Nation's)behalf, to contest for a second term in 2011, Nkanga said, "We are satisfied that you are keeping your promise of reinventing the era of Ibibio Union's Unity". The unity plot which has been unceasingly canvassed and propagated by well meaning citizens is what the quintessential leader in Chief Akpabio personifies.
The path of distinctive leadership according to leading scholars of leadership and development studies consists of independence to make a difference, brilliance, to outgrow ourselves and relevance by which people are inspired. Leadership therefore has become one of the most widely debated issues in public discourse because it holds the key to the highest possible degree of productivity. It remains one of the most relavant aspects of organization and management. Defining it has been all the more challenging owing to its dynamism. A notable school of thought views it as"the capacity of leaders to listen and observe, to use their expertise as a starting point to encourage between all levels of decision making, to articulate their own visions clearly. It is initiating change that makes for substantive improvement rather than managing change. Not even the kind of change that the current Federal administration is offering Nigerians today.
History is replete with illuminating chronicle of men and women whose leadership in their various callings were distinctive. The priority of strategic planning as a cardinal element in leadership, Akpabio had provided a definitive and desired future for the State through his vision of making the State a destination choice and away from being a thoroughfare.
That passion and dream is not stillborn, with the coming of Governor Udom Emmanuel with the most sort after credible credentials owing to his background and rising profile in financial and corporate sector administration both in Nigeria and in the global circle. Akwaibom indeed needed a man of this substance who can pivot the State economy in an ailing national economy and global misfortunes. The choice of Udom Emmanuel is to ensure a stable state drive in a near crumbling economy and cash crunch. Akpabio's successor whether the devil likes it or yes represents an Akwa Ibom State with an empowered populace and a private sector driven economy acting as a catalyst to Nigeria's revolution.
REMINISCING :There is no arguing the fact that among the tonic that propels human inventions is the power of vision. And for the vision to be achieved, it must be defined. Every vision must be strategically planned, analysed and targets outlined. There must also be a clearly defined time line for determining the realization of the vision. This is the hallmark of leadership and the defining character for leader effectiveness. Sen. Akpabio defied the trend and norms that guarantees a first timer in the red hallowed chambers of the National Assembly in clinching the top house premium position of Minority Leader. Not because he was so swift, like it is often said that the race is not for the swift but a substantiation of the fact that who God has chosen to annoint, he consults no man. That is what I term as the ranking process by Nature. And no one can beat the reach. And back to the Akwaibom project...the story under the dynamic and exemplary leadership of Sen. Chief (Dr.)Godswill Obot Akpabio (CON),(then Governor between 2007-2015) from his first day in office casting our minds back, Akpabio articulated and presented to the teeming populace of the state his vision for the actualization of the dreams of our forebears thus :"An Akwa Ibom State with an empowered populace and a private sector driven economy acting as a catalyst to Nigeria's Industrial Revolution ". As earlier emphasized similar to the line toed by his successor, Gov. Udom Emmanuel. It compliments the saying that a common vision shared will always stand the test of time.
ENTER UDOM EMMANUEL:Owing to focus and policy consistency, we (Akwa Ibomites)can say with all sense of responsibility that we are on the verge of reaching our targets on people focused governance in Akwa Ibom State. With prioritized investments in public infrastructure and social services, this leadership quintessence has in the past eight years demonstrated an uncommon capacity and understanding of Abraham Lincoln's treatise on democracy as "Government of the people, by the people and for the people ".
In all, Gov. Udom Emmanuel is not relenting in his effort and task of sustaining superior performance and of course gearing up to surpassing laid down efforts. This is the consolidation process the Governor is concentrating his energy in making the state an industrial hub in the Gulf of Guinea.
