Super Eagles forward Victor Moses played his third straight pre-season game and provided an assist and new £70m signing Alvaro Morata made his debut as Chelsea lost 3-2 to Bayern Munich in the 2017 International Champions Cup in Singapore on Tuesday.
Rafinha and Thomas Muller (brace) were the scorers for Bayern Munich while Marcos Alonso and Michy Batshuayi got on the score sheet for Chelsea.
Chelsea started with a strong line-up that included the likes of N’Golo Kante, Moses, Marcos Alonso and Cesc Fabregas but it was Bayern, who also had Franck Ribery and Robert Lewandowski from start, that took the lead in the sixth minute through Rafinha who hit a long range shot which flew past Thibaut Courtois.
In the 12th minute, Bayern went 2-0 up as Muller volleyed in Ribery’s cross.
A few minute later new signing James Rodriguez should have made it three for Bayern but his effort went inches off target.
Bayern continued to dominate and added a third in the 27th minute as Muller got his second after hitting a long range curler into the top left corner.
With five minutes left Chelsea went close on three occasions with Alonso, Michy Batshuayi and Gary Cahill going very close.
In three minutes added time, Chelsea pulled a goal back through Alonso who volleyed in Moses’ cutback into the bottom left corner.
In the 56th minute, Ribery tried an audacious left-foot volley from the edge of Chelsea’s box off a brilliant cross from Kingsley Coman but his effort went over the bar.
A minute later Rodriguez had a superb chance to extend the clearly superior Bayern’s lead only to see his free header go inches wide.
Rodriguez was presented with another chance on 60 minutes but Cahill got back quickly to block away for a corner.
Chelsea were lucky not to concede a fourth goal in the 67th minute but Rodriguez’s low shot went narrowly wide off target.
In the 69th minute Courtois got down quickly to palm away Rodriguez’s strike after a brilliant solo effort from Ribery.
David Luiz had a chance to score in the 71st minute but his left-foot shot took a deflection before coming off the post for a corner.
With less than 15 minutes left Renato Sanches hit a low strike which did not bother Courtois much.
Chelsea made it a nervy ending after Bayern made several changes as Batshuayi slammed in Fabregas’ corner off subsitute Morata’s knock down in the 86th minute to make it 3-2.
Chelsea will take on Inter Milan in their next International Champions Cup on Saturday also in Singapore.
