The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has set up a nine-member committee to develop a blueprint on the restructuring of Nigeria.
The committee is led by the Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai.
Members of the committee are the governors of Kano, Plateau, Ogun, Osun states; the former governor of Edo State, Prof. Oserheimen Osunbor; the APC National Organising Secretary, Senator Osita Izunaso; and the National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, while Senator Olubunmi Adetunmbi will act as the Secretary.
The party attributed the delay in holding its National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting to the illness of President Muhammadu Buhari.
Consequently, the party resolved to hold the NEC meeting after due consultations with the Acting President Yemi Osinbajo.
The APC has repeatedly postponed its NEC meeting which has attracted criticisms from major stakeholders, who have blamed the National Working Committee (NWC) for the failure to fix a date for the meeting.
Governor Abdulaziz Yari Abubakar of Zamfara State, who briefed the media on Wednesday after the governors’ parley with the NWC, blamed the illness of the president for the delayed NEC meeting.
Governor Yari said that the governors will now meet with Osinbajo to arrive at modalities for the conduct of the NEC meeting, stressing that the Acting President must take charge of activities in the absence of Buhari.
The governor also disclosed that the meeting with the NWC yesterday deliberated on the ongoing calls for restructuring, leading to the setting up of the committee to define and advise the party with what the APC really means by restructuring as it is contained in the party’s manifesto.
He said: “Some of the key issues we discussed include restructuring, the national convention and the processes leading to the national convention of the party and also decided that this regular meeting with the governors be extended to the principal officers of the National Assembly.”
“We discussed a number of issues ranging from congresses which will commence on Saturday to elect two delegates for the convention. We also discussed the issue of the relationship between the governors and the National Assembly and the need to have this meeting between the principal officers of the National Assembly, the governors and the party.”
“We also discussed the elections in Osun State. We all know what happened and the fact that it is APC all the way and not because PDP has the power to win election.”
“We know what happened there and we are on top of the situation and a committee made up of governors and officers from the national secretariat was formed to revisit the issue. Let me say it is a wake-up call on how to deal with things like that in future.”
“I have repeatedly mentioned it that setting up a committee on restructuring, what we are talking about is a committee that will articulate what the APC meant by restructuring. We have realised for some time that when people talk about restructuring, we are no longer sure if they are talking about the same thing.”
“People have said that the APC promised restructuring. So, we need to sit down as a party to develop a shared understanding of what we mean by restructuring in our manifesto. This committee that is set up, which will be chaired by the governor of Kaduna State is mainly to define exactly what APC means by restructuring so that every member will know what we mean. It is not a committee to set up modalities for restructuring”.
“But we have to put a process in place so that we can hold the midterm convention. It is not an elective convention and the three delegates to be elected on Saturday, July 29 will be the delegates for convention which will fill some of the existing vacancies. This convention has nothing to do with the PDP.”
In his opening remarks, the APC National Chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, said that the turnout of the governors was a clear indication that they are set to back the party to future victories
