Almost on a weekly basis, Mr Bassey Etim has made it a routine to visit either the office of Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly or the office of the Senate President expecting to be sworn in for ‘winning’ a party primary he never contested.
He is usually armed with a certificate of return already nullified by a court of law and using a controversial court judgment that is being challenged in a higher court of law as a basis to be sworn in. Etim has become something of an embarrassment to the government and people of Akwa Ibom State in Abuja. He has indeed become a laughing stock to the staff and security personnel of the National Assembly. He is always ordered by the leadership of the senate to go home and wait for the court processes to be concluded as demanded by the law each time he goes there to be sworn in.
Speaking Tuesday night in Abuja, the Senator representing Akwa Ibom North East Senatorial District and Chair, Senate Committee on Gas, Senator Bassey Albert Akpan (OBA) appeared unperturbed by the incessant visits of Mr Etim to the Senate to possibly unseat him.
“It is God through the good people of Akwa Ibom North East Senatorial District that put me here in the Senate. I have the firm conviction that I will finish what God sent me to do here. I will not be distracted by the antics of my opponent”, he said, with confidence.
He added “My supporters shouldn’t worry. All they need to do is to continue to pray for me. There is no cause for alarm. I have their mandate and the mandate of God to finish my assignment in the Senate”. Senator Albert, just back from Houston, Texas USA where he along other senators went to attend the Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) among other conferences aimed at building capacity with regard to the expected PIGB said.
Senator Albert said he is more concerned about delivering on his mandate than be distracted by a man who wants to take his seat through the back door.
It could be recalled that Hon. Bassey Etim has now resorted to spending big on media to whip up public sentiments and to pay rented crowd of some lawyers and civil society groups to put pressure on the Senate leadership. Senator Albert said if he has money to spend, let him continue, after all at the end of the day, it is the law that will take its course.
