.. charges student leaders to step up fight against campus cultism
UBONG SAMPSON- UYO
The Speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. (Barr) Onofiok Luke has assured the University of Uyo students and management of the state government’s readiness to partner with them in fighting the rising case of insecurity on campus until peace is fully restored.
The Speaker gave the assurance, Thursday, while addressing members of the UNIUYO Students' Union Senate who were on a visit to the State House of Assembly Complex to observe plenary.
Sympathising with the students on a recent sad incident where armed bandits reportedly invaded the UNIUYO campus during night study hours to rob students of valuables, the 6th Assembly Speaker was confident that the school's Vice Chancellor, Professor Enefiok Essien and his led management has the capacity to take the challenge and proffer solution to same.
In his words: "let me sympathise with you and the entire students on the recent sad incident that occured in your campus. I know the Vice Chancellor very well, having studied under him then in the Faculty of Law where he served as Dean, and I know he has the capacity to take the challenge. This issue has come to the attention of government and despite being a federal institution, the school is being hosted by the state and majority of the students are of Akwa Ibom origin. So I am assuring that we will partner with the management to ensure security is tightened and peace is restored".
While commending the visiting students for taking up the challenge of leadership in speaking for their colleagues and mediating on issues concerning them where it matters, Barr Luke also charged them to step up the campaign against cultism and other social vices on campus.
"Do not be deceived by anybody that anything good can come out of cultism. I know people will come telling you that there is a network that will connect you after school if you join cultism. That is entirely false; there is no such network. God is the greatest network you can ever depend on. After God, what you know and have inside you is the next network that can guarantee you open doors to success in life", he said.
Speaker Luke also challenged the students to rise above their respective fields of study and seek wider knowledge by developing interest and researching on other areas. This, he said, will equip them and save them from being found wanting whenever any opportunity comes their way.
His words: "my charge to you is to use every opportunity you have to sharpen your intellect and broaden your knowledge. This will place you in good positions to face any challenge and will fit you into any role whenever the opportunity comes knocking".
The Speaker further advised the students to always remember the importance of their studies and take same seriously even in the midst of their drive and passion for campus politics. "Let me also advise that you should endeavour to take your studies seriously even in the midst of your drive and passion for campus politics and other social engagements. Your academics is your primary responsibility as a student and you have to ensure that you leave shool with a good result", Luke added.
