Governor Mr. Udom Emmanuel has notified the State House of Assembly that the Federal Government has paid the sum of N14.5Billion, being refunds from over reduction from the Paris Club debt made to states by the federal government.
Governor Udom disclosed this today at plenary in a message he sent to the legislature.
Dated 23rd December, 2016, the message which was read by the Clerk, Mrs Mandu Umoren, sought the leave of the lawmakers for the fund to be captured in the 2017 appropriation bill currently before the House of Assembly. He requested their approval to enable him utilise the said money in the settlement outstanding pensions, gratuity and other contractual obligations.
Motion for the receipt of the message for legislative action was moved by the leader of of the House, Rt. Hon. Sir Udo Kieran Akpan,(Oruk-Anam State Constituency), while his counterpart from Essien Udim State Constituency, Hon. Nse Ntuen seconded the motion.
Leading debate on the matter, Sir. Udo Kierian who commended the governor for being a transparent leader, said he was satisfied with the way the governor was piloting affairs of the state. He enjoined his colleagues to support the governor's request by according it the necessary legislative backing to enable the governor utilize the funds in settling pending pension and gratuity matters, and some contractual agreements. The House was unanimous in its support for the governor's request.
The committee on Finance and Appropriation was mandated to undertake an in depth study and consideration on the matter. It was asked to report back to the House on the same day it would be submitting it's report on the 2016 appropriation bill.
While committing the matter to the appropriate committee of the House for necessary action, Speaker, Rt. Hon. Barr. Onofiok Luke commended Governor Udom Emmanuel for being transparent in the running of government business, and also for living up to expectations.
