Akwa Ibom State has secured the hosting right for the 11th Edition of Nigerian Navy Games slated for 20th and 22nd of February 2017.
The state Governor Mr Udom Emmanuel announced this when he played host to a delegation from the Chief of Naval Staff led by Flag Officer Commanding Eastern Naval Command, Rear Admiral James Oluwole at Government House, Uyo.
He said "Sports is an instrument of national cohesion, tourism and physical development" and commended the Nigeria Navy as well as other security agencies for maintaining eagle eye surveillance in the state to reduce criminality.
Governor Emmanuel expressed appreciation to the Navy Command for their choice of Akwa Ibom for the games saying "the state is noted all over the World for it sound and impeccable hospitality" and assured the force of enabling grounds that would facilitate the success of the sport activities.
Commenting on the economic gains of bringing the sport fiesta to the state, the Governor said that 11th edition of the games will, among other things, enliven business transactions in the state, exposed Akwa Ibom Athletes to competitors outside the state and further ginger their interest in Sporting activities.
He used the occasion to call on authorities of the Nigerian Navy to expedite action towards the commencement of academic activities in the Naval University cited at Ekparakwa, Mkpat Enin Local Government Area of the state and also called for establishment of National War College in the state stressing that Akwa Ibom with the largest coastline of about 29Km deserve more from the Navy authorities.
Mr Emmanuel acknowledge the father figure role of President Mohammadu Buhari, Governor's Forum, Service Chiefs and well meaning Nigerians, who have shown solidarity on the December 10th Reigners Bible Church building collapse.
Earlier, the Flag Officer Eastern Naval Command Rear Admiral James Oluwole, while lauding infrastructural development in the State, said that Akwa Ibom has redefined governance thereby emerging a model state in the country.
He said the state has elevated it pedestal in Sports development by putting in place a World Class Sports Stadium and Sports Academy in it ten federal Constituencies stressing that the Sports Centres would contribute immensely in the production of future champions who will win laurels to the country and the state.
He added that these facilities informed the choice of Akwa Ibom for the Sports fiesta and that the games which would aid in the selection of talents for Armed Forces and the World Military Games, would draw Athletes from various Naval formations in the country to the State and solicited for accommodation for the participants.
Rear Admiral Oluwole explained that 18 games are scheduled for Uyo while 4 will take place in Lagos State.
Highpoint of the visit was a presentation of Souvenir by Governor Udom Emmanuel to the Naval Flag Officer Rear Admiral Oluwole.
