Attention:
Mr. Paul Alexander Udofia
Honourable Commissioner for Education
Akwa Ibom State.
26th December, 2016.
Sir,
AN APPEAL FOR TERMLY HOSTING OF OPEN DAY IN PUBLIC PRIMARY AND SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN AKWA IBOM STATE.
Let me start by congratulating you Mr. Paul Alexander Udofia on your well deserved appointment as the Honourable Commissioner for Education thereby giving you an opportunity to affect millions of lives today and generations to come. You have been found worthy to oversee the affairs of one of the most important ministry which to me is a resounding testament of your competence, character and commitment to service.
However, this letter is a necessity and borne out of my passion for educational advancement and development in my country and her people and most especially the progress of Akwa Ibom State. I cannot but be concerned and bring to your notice any idea I believe will add positively to the lives of the future generation.
Sir, I have no doubt that the success of any government depends on the sum total of the contributions of its people and their readiness and commitment to supporting it and quest for the attainment of its strategic developmental objectives. A key component of this support is giving positive suggestions and engaging in constructive criticism with a view of making it perform better.
Education Ministry is the backbone of the future generation. Nelson Mandela of blessed memory stated that "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world." if truly we are going to build up leaders with excellence then we must wake up. Something must be done about the high rate of failure in JAMB, WAEC, NECO etc. Something has to be done about the high rate of Government teachers that doesn't go to work but receive salaries at the end of the month.
With the recent failure in WAEC, NECO and NABTEB examinations, I will strongly recommend the declaration of OPEN-DAY every term across Secondary Schools in the state to give room to parents and guardians to access the activities of their children, meet teachers and access the school environment.
The role of the anticipated OPEN- DAY in educational sector cannot be overemphasized as it will play very active roles in educating a child. You will agree with me that the idea of training a child is not an individual thing but a collective responsibility of both the teachers and parents.
OPEN DAY will be a special day across the state where parents, pupils and students can visit the school during a working day to meet with the class teachers and subjects teachers of the children.
Parents Teachers Association (PTA) has been politicized and thereby lose the missions of their mandates and I believe no other method can replace the kind of one-to-one interview with the subject teachers and class teachers at which parents can ask hard and practical questions.
Sir, for a school to be able to do well in every ramification, then useful input from external sources have to be thoroughly considered and implemented. A good platform for this input is declaration of OPEN DAY to allow parents to at least monitor the activities of the school and their children.
With this, parents will know where Government is going wrong and bring in their inputs in order to move the educational sector of the state forward. I believe the idea of making our State a better place is not an individual thing but a collective responsibility of all of us.
This Day when declared, will enhance children's self-esteem, improve children's academic achievement, create room for constructive criticism which will in turn move the sector forward, improve parents - child relationship, help parents develop positive attitudes towards school and a better understanding of the schooling process as well as incorporate the culture of checks and balances in the educational system.
Once again, I felt I needed to contribute my quota to the development of educational sector in the state, a sector that trains the future leaders. My conviction is that if this is done, our future leaders will be properly guided.
I shall continue to offer my candid opinion in this matter and beyond.
Yours in struggle for a better Akwa Ibom State.
