COMMUNIQUE ISSUED AT THE END OF MEDIATION MEETING BETWEEN NUPENG/PTD, NIGERIA SECURITY AND CIVIL DEFENSE CORPS AND GOVERNMENT REPRESENTATIVES.
1. On 29th October, 2016, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps apprehended a driver with truck laden with an AGO at Ikot Akpan Nkuk, Ukanafun LGA in Akwa Ibom state. The truck capsized at the exhibit yard of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps in Akwa Ibom State when its driver was driving in thereby wasting a sizeable quantity of AGO. While investigating the matter, the personnel of Civil Defense were harassed at NNPC, Eleme Port Harcourt.
2. National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers of Nigeria (NUPENG) and Petroleum Tanker Drivers Union (PTD) consequently embarked on strike by stopping supply of Petroleum Products to Akwa Ibom State. This was done without prior warning to the Akwa Ibom State Government.
3. Following the intervention of Akwa Ibom State Government through the office of the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Petroleum Matters and The State Director of Department of State Security Services, a stakeholders & mediation meeting with NUPENG/PTD on the one hand and the Commandant of Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps on the other hand, was convoked.
4. After serious discussion, the following decisions were reached:
a) That the said truck in possession of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps, Akwa Ibom State Command be released to the Driver of the vehicle forthwith.
b) That all pending law suits shall also be withdrawn by all parties and further prosecution in law Courts of members of PTD in relation to this issue shall cease.
c) That NUPENG / PTD shall accordingly suspend the ongoing strike so that supply of petroleum products to Akwa Ibom State should resume forthwith.
d) That NUPENG/PTD shall ensure the unconditional release of the operational vehicle, still camera and any other items recovered and belonging to The Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps, Akwa Ibom State Command.
e) There shall be no victimization of any party to this mediation for the reason of this strike action.
