THE 29TH ANNIVERSARY GIFT AND HOW IKONO UYO LEADERS HAVE FAILED US

By Cavil Inwang| When I was a kid, my Dad told me, there are so many things you must learn and act on as first son of this family. First is making certain sacrifices as your younger ones watch and will eventually follow suit.

On Tuesday the 21st of September 2016, the Governor of Akwa Ibom State held a media parley with Journalists from different chapels in the state. The event which incorporated a question and answer session, brought some kind of light to Ikono Uyo clan as Mr. Ndanti Ekuh, publisher of Daily Detail Newspaper and one time Governorship aspirant from Nung Asan Ikono in Uyo LGA narrated to the Governor the disconnection existing between the urban area of Uyo and Ikono clan. The community has not been given proper attention by the state government.

Ikono clan, comprising ward 8 and 9, has two major roads; Ibagwa - Ikot Akpabio Road and Ikot Ekeyak - Etinan Road.

Responding, the Governor, Mr. Udom Emmanuel instructed the Ministry of Works to pay a visit to that part of the State as described by Mr. Ndanti.

As an indigene, I couldn't sleep that night. Till today, I am wondering what leadership we have in Ikono clan.
I have heard stories of how our leaders are masters in petition writing, rather than attracting development to the People of their community.

Oh Uyo!!! When will we drop our selfish interests and focus on building for our generations. We should shove aside personal interests whenever the opportunity is given to us to request or demand for infrastructural development from the Government or whoever, and in to our community.

Sometimes I tell people I am from Etinan not because I'm not proud of my origin, but because of the leadership failure of Ikono Elders, and their tendency not to look at the problems affecting the community but their stomachs.

But, it is time for us to rise to togetherness and say NO to such tendencies. We are done watching while this invention called "Elders" use and abuse us, burying our ideas out of sight and out of mind, while extracting our youthful strength, gentrifying our genius, trying us on like costumes before discarding our bodies like rinds of strange fruits.

And I ask; Why do we vote for people who cannot stand and speak for Ikono?
We have learnt a lot and it's time to say NO to the forces that reject development in Ikono clan.

As for the  "29th Anniversary Gift" to Ikono people, I see some opportunists rushing in to take undue credit.  To you, I say, if you have no interest in homogenous developmental inclusion for Ikono people, don't make suggestions for those who do. Sit you down!
