The member representing Ibesikpo Asutan State Constituency,Rt.Hon.(Elder)Aniekan Uko has raised alarm over the unwholesome and alleged illegal charges on electricity consumers in Akwa Ibom State by the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company  with prayers that their wanton operations should be addressed.

The Ibesikpo Asutan spokesman raised this concern when he presented a motion penultimate Tuesday with the caption"MOTION AGAINST THE UNWHOLESOME AND ALLEGED CHARGES ON ELECTRICITY CONSUMERS IN AKWA IBOM STATE BY THE PORT HARCOURT ELECTRICITY DISTRIBUTION COMPANY"

For Elder Uko,the matter is so extortive after  paying so much, considering the recent hike in electricity tariff, some communities in Akwa Ibom State are far from seeing electricity light for months let alone enjoying quality service.

Expatiating further, the Rules and Ethics chair lamented that despite the inability of the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company(PHED) to supply meters to consumers, the company's estimated billing for unmetered customer is far from being transparent,as some rural communities are often a times charged as though they were residing in commercial or industrial areas.

Still worried by the pathetic situation, the lawmaker says that in most cases, customers are made to pay for the accumulated tariff after several months  of breakdown of  electricity transformers or poles, when it is apparent that such customers never consumed electricity during that period.

However,in conclusion, the astute lawmaker made the following prayers

1.Urge the management of PHEDC to commence the distribution of pre-paid meters to her customers including the rural communities operating bull account.

2.Urge the management of PHEDC in Akwa Ibom State to be responsible for repairs and replacement of electricity  transformers, poles and other related equipments used in supply of electricity as prescribed by the Nigerian Electricity Regulating Commission.

3.Call on the management of PHEDC to stop charging communities for accumulated bills during prolonged period of breakdown of electricity equipment, when this communities never consumed electricity .

Members however expressed satisfaction with the motion which they said was quite timely and people oriented.

Consequently, the motion was referred to the joint committees of Commerce,Industry and Tourism and that of Rural Development and Public Utility to submit its report within two weeks.
