The 29th anniversary of the Akwa Ibom State creation may not be forgotten in a hurry by the people of Ikono Uyo Clan, Abak and Etinan as the State Governor, Mr. Udom Emmanuel, in the joy of the celebration, promised to construct Ibagwa – Ikot Akpabio Road and Ikot Ekpeyak – Etinan Road as part of his efforts to expand the State Capital City.
The Governor made the promise following an appeal by the Editor-in-Chief of Daily Detail Newspaper, Mr. Ndanti Ekuh during a media parley with the Governor to mark the 29th Anniversary of the State.
The Editor who hails from Nung Asang Ikono in Uyo Local Government Area had while talking with the Governor complained to him (the Governor) that his community among others has been disconnected from the urban areas of the state despite the fact that it is part of Uyo Local Government Area, the Akwa Ibom State capital.
Speaking on behalf of the people of Ikono Clan, Ekuh said for 29 years of the state, the people of Ikono clan have not been given proper attention by the state government despite the numerous developmental projects shared to some part of the state especially, in the last nine years. He further explained that Ikono Clan which comprises of Ward 8 and 9 in Uyo Local Government has two major roads including Ibagwa – Ikot Akpabio Road and Ikot Ekpeyak – Etinan Road.
“Your Excellency Sir, in the spirit of the 29th anniversary of Akwa Ibom State, I, on behalf of the people of Ikono Clan, respectfully plead and appeal that you should please award contract for construction of the two major roads we have in Ikono Clan which are Ibagwa – Ikot Akpabio Road and Ikot Ekpeyak – Etinan Road. “Your Excellency, as I speak, the only hospital we have in Ikono Clan which is Ikot Ebo General Hospital has been abandoned by doctors, nurses and the people of the area due to lack of access road. Sincerely, we will have reasons to celebrate this 29th anniversary if His Excellency graciously award contract for construction of roads in Ikono,” Ekuh appealed.
In his response, Governor Udom Emmanuel said he is aware of the issue of under-development in Ikono clan and had since put up good plans for the people of the area. According to the Governor, his administration is re-designing Uyo Capital City to expand it up to Ikono Clan which he said has a lot of developmental potentials. This, he said, followed his vision to attract investors from around the globe to invest in Akwa Ibom State, saying that the expansion will make the capital city big enough to accommodate the influx of people that will be coming into the state in a no distant time. While assuring Ndanti Ekuh and the entire people of Ikono clan of government’s urgent intervention on the deplorable roads in the area, the Governor said he will award contract for construction of Ibagwa – Ikot Akpabio Road and Ikot Ekpeyak – Etinan Road and also assured that his administration is committed to developing the state and making it Africa’s industrial hub and a destination for all.
