UKO UMOH: When Humility and selfless service takes the centre-stage by Godwin Akpan

Humility is not displayed by physical or cosmetic show-off, rather it is evident by speeches and actions of people who are in position of authority.

These characteristics were displayed by a man of hounour and goodwill in the person of Mr. Uko Friday Umoh, the Special Assistant to the governor of Akwa Ibom State on Local Media, on the occasion of the maiden edition of an Interactive night with Journalists in the State, little wonder the Apostolic Church of Nigeria recently conferred on him the title of an Ambassador of Light, an honour many described as well deserving.

Standing in front of a well-filled auditorium made up of members of the fourth estate of the realm and some members of the governor’s cabinet, the newly decorated Ambassador of Light, delivered his speech with awe and humility, in a manner that many thought could desecrate the sanctity of his exulted office, when he pointed out that he was considered by the executive governor for appointment “despite my array of inadequacies”.

This simplicity of character displayed by Uko Umoh on the night, give credence to the biblical injunctions that says: ‘God resist the PROUD, but give grace to the HUMBLE.
He went further: “When God appoints, He qualifies. When therefore God led him (Gov. Udom Emmanuel) to appoint me as his special assistant, he knew that God will qualify me not only to do the job that he assigned me, but do so in an impactful manner”.

And so it was, few months into office as the S.A to the governor, despite the obvious harsh economy and paucity of funds in the state, his impact has begun on a positive note; donating work tools to 14 Chapels of Nigerian Union of Journalists NUJ, Akwa Ibom State Chapter. What a gesture!

Stunned and bewildered by the magnanimity shown by Uko Umoh to the various media chapels in the state, the Hon. Commissioner for Information, Mr. Aniekan Umana, the State Chairman of NUJ, Mr. Patrick Albert, the State Attoney General and Commissioner for Justice, Uwemedimo Nwoko and Commissioner for Finance, Akan Okon, were very lavish in their show of appreciation for Uko Umoh.

They thanked the S.A for remembering Journalists at a critical time such as this, noting that the growth, progress and development of the state rest prominently in the hands of great writers. They used the occasion to admonish Journalists to imbibe the culture of ethical Journalism so as to uphold the core value of the profession.

The guests and participants were treated to sumptuous and delicious delicacies that were served to the delight of everyone present. Media gurus and green-horns took advantage of the occasion to exchanged pleasantries, contacts and most importantly, settled whatever differences they may have had in the course of discharging their duties.

Indeed, this media parley organised by the Ambassador of Light and the Special Assistant to the governor on Local Media, Mr. Uko Umoh aka Uko Light, no doubt, is an indication that truly light has come to stay in the Media community in the state and in the spirit of Dakkada, those that God have blessed, especially other political appointees, should take a cue from what Uko Umoh habitually do and task themselves to be blessings to others. By so doing, our society will be a better place. Indeed, Uko Umoh’s gesture is truly FOR THE LOVE OF NIGERIA.
