#AKSWardsCongress: Speaker urges for PDP membership drive #PDPWardCongresses


The Speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly Rt. Hon. Onofiok Luke has urged members of the Peoples Democratic Party at all levels to consolidate on the strength of the party by canvassing for membership. He said this while addressing party faithful who had turned out en masse to elect a new set of executive council members for Itreto ward of Nsit Ubium chapter of the PDP.
“Nsit Ubium is PDP. Itreto is PDP. We must consolidate on the strength that we have through membership drive for our party. I want us in Itreto to begin a membership drive which will see to the addition of at least ten thousand new members to our great party. From home and in the Diaspora, the newly elected ward executive has the mandate to canvass for membership”.

The Speaker thanked Governor Udom Emmanuel for allowing the people the atmosphere of liberty to elect their choice candidates for the various party positions. He described today's election of party executives as an example of the governor’s commitment to respecting the will of the people. The Speaker added that the governor had told him to assure the people of the ward that his sustainable development drive will see to the continuous support for women and youths through making loans accessible to them for small and medium scale enterprises.

At the congress, which had a massive turnout of women, the Speaker also assured of the commitment of the First Lady, Mrs Udom Emmanuel to empower families in the state to attain greater economic height. He said the programmes under Mrs Emmanuel’s Family Empowerment and Youth Reorientation Prgramme, FAYReP, initiative were designed to better the lot of women in the state.

Earlier, the Speaker had joined hundreds of other members of the party in Itreto ward to vote for candidates in the ward election. The election which was done through option A-4 had voters queuing behind candidates of their choice.

Mr Udo Ekpo Ikwok was elected as Ward Chairman with 127 votes; Deputy Chairman, Emman R. Ekpo scored 83 votes; Secretary, Mr Utibe Etuk scored 87 votes; while Mr Ebong James scored 70 votes to win as the ward PDP youth leader. Others who were elected were Sunday Akpan for the office of ward PDP Treasurer with 85 votes, and Mrs Rachael Jeremiah Asuquo who polled 86 votes to win the position of PDP Woman Leader in Itreto ward. The offices of Financial Secretary, PRO, Organising Secretary, Auditor, and Ex-Officios 1 to 5 were also contested and won respectively.

The congress committee led by Obong David Udo Umana thanked the people for conducting themselves peacefully during the election, urging them to brace themselves for 2019 when the PDP will come back to power at the federal level following the failure of the All Progressives Congress, APC, to deliver on its much touted “Change” promise.
