STUDENTS WELFARE INTERVENTION SCHEME LAUNCHED IN UYO



By Ofonime Honesty: In a bid to better the welfare of Akwa Ibom students, the Students Welfare Intervention Scheme facilitated by the Special Assistant to Governor Udom Emmanuel on Student Affairs, Comrade Otobong Akpan, was over the weekend inaugurated in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital.

The event which was attended by the Commissioner for Education, Hon. Aniekan Akpan and other officials from the education ministry, representative of the Honourable Commissioner for Information, tutors and students drawn from tertiary institutions and secondary schools drawn from tertiary institutions, secondary schools and primary schools across Akwa Ibom State, was held at the conference hall of the e-library, Uyo.

In her welcome address, Comrade Otobong Akpan while stating that the scheme is the latest in a long list of tangible initiatives spearheaded by her office with support from government via the Ministry of Education, asserted that the programme will surely make students arise in consonance with the Dakkada philosophy.

She disclosed that the programme shall be expanded to accommodate more beneficiaries, and urged them to justify the gesture by studying hard.

Comrade Akpan lauded Governor Emmanuel for being student friendly and reassured the governor of maximum support from the student community.

On his part, the Education Commissioner, Hon. Aniekan Akpan, expressed satisfaction over Comrade Otobong Akpan's exploits since being appointed as aide, declaring that the student community has never had it so good.

Hon. Akpan while describing the scheme as a timely act, noted that the scheme falls in line with the present administration's cardinal objective of offering qualitative education to Akwa Ibom students.

Inaugurating the scheme, the commissioner called on beneficiaries to utilize the opportunity granted them judiciously.

Also speaking, the Commissioner for Information, Mr. Aniekan Umanah, noted that the scheme will surely consolidate the free education policy of the present administration.

The commissioner who was represented by Mr. Joseph Edem, who is an Information Director in the ministry, promised that the activities of the SA's office and that of the education ministry will continue receiving massive publicity.

The event featured donation of wheel chairs, hearing aids, tape rcorders, writing boards, presentation of cheques for payment of tuition fees and

payment of hospitals bills.

In their separate remarks, two beneficiaries, Miss Eno Ita and Idorenyin Uweh, thanked God for using Comrade Otobong Akpan, to better their lives.

They prayed God to continue giving the present administration the courage to surmount challenges so as to be able to continue putting smiles on faces of the populace.
