The wife of Akwa Ibom governor Mrs. Martha Udom Emmanuel has stressed the need for a peaceful coexistence among Akwa Ibom people especially women saying any house that is divided among itself cannot stand.
Mrs. Emmanuel made the call yesterday at the Uyo township stadium during a novelty football match between wives of legislators (LEWA) and commissioners/special advisers wives association(COSAWA) to mark the 2016 international women's day.
The governor’s wife said unity being the bedrock of the society remain the cardinal requisite for a prosperous society adding, that when there is love and tolerance in the land , the society is bound to thrive.
She said the theme for this year's celebration which is 'Pledge for Parity' is apt because the society is fast recognizing the role of women in nation building.
While congratulating the women on the 2016 celebration, Mrs. Emmanuel noted that the administration of Gov. Udom Emmanuel is ever determined to empower the womenfolk in the state which will make them become economically dependent.
Speaking earlier, the commissioner for women affairs and social welfare, Dr. Mrs. Glory Edet said the football match is part of the weeklong activities to mark the 2016 international women's day in Akwa Ibom state saying the game being a unifying factor, will usher in unity in the state.
She thanked the governor and wife Martha for their love for Akwa Ibom women noting that this is the first time the celebration has gathered such momentum in the state.
In their different goodwill messages, the deputy speaker of Akwa Ibom House of Assembly, Hon. Felicia Bassey and member representing Itu state constituency Hon. Idongesit ituen all congratulated the women on the 2016 international women's day, pledging that they will continue to act in their capacity to better the lots of women in the state.
The novelty football game which had the governor’s wife, Mrs. Martha Emmanuel performed the kick-off ceremony saw the legislator's wives association (LEWA) defeating commissioner's wives by a lone goal.
