NOW THAT THE BATTLE IS OVER By Vincent Essien

The decision of the Supreme Court in the Akwa Ibom Gubernatorial election petition has put an end to one of the most sensational and acrimonious electoral disputes I have ever witnessed. The battle between two former SSG who served the same boss, exposed the instincts of the average Nigerian politician, as many dumped and traded political loyalties. However I was convinced that just like in 2011 the opposition (then ACN with John Udoedeghe) had got it wrong in their choice of candidate as UOU was unconvincing, so I stayed in my lane.

Beyond the wanting to fight alleged  injustice perpetuated towards him by Ex- Governor Akpabio, what else did UOU propose as his developmental agenda for Akwa Ibom state? Nothing! Yet he was erroneously garbed in the frame of a harbinger of change, a man who had done nothing but serve as a public servant. Governor Udom Emmanuel was miles ahead, not only because he is from Eket Senatorial district (my zone), which for me is beside the point, rather, he campaigned on a developmental agenda that includes industrialization, which is gaining some traction because I was at Peacock paints last week to make enquiries about their products which are back in the market after 15 years.

The entire episode call for sober reflection as I am of the view that so much energy and resources are devoted to politics in our state that are often not in consonance with present realities. Too many rallies and receptions, complete with uniforms and wrappers for the womenfolk’s, so much cheap newsprint wasted on guerilla journalism all constituting a colossal waste of our commonwealth.

For those who have found themselves in the opposition, if they stay there long enough, they should refocus and develop credible strategies and alternatives. Akwa Ibom must get to work, there is much that can be done and Governor Udom Emmanuel can rise to the challenge, and we must support him in this task.
