In about 34 days or so, 2016 will be here. It will be a brand New Year. Many people will christen it with different names: year of this, year of that. It will sound like 2015 was bad luck or a stubborn year that prevented many from fulfilling their desires. 2016 will then look like that long awaited magic year when things will turn around and people can now have their best year ever.
What many fail to understand is that the year or the name given to the year does not matter, what matters is what we do in that year. And as the popular saying goes, if we fail to plan we are planning to fail. 2015 will only be a bad year if we fail to do things that will make it good and in the same vein, 2016 will be a good year if we do what will make it so. Therefore, what makes the year good is what we put on ground before it comes and the things we do when we are in it.
So I have a few questions for us to ponder on. What are our personal and business goals for 2016?
What things would we be doing, and what would we stop doing, to advance these goals?
Which relationships would we take advantage of to move our lives and businesses forward?
What habits are we going to stop and what new one are we going to cultivate?
Which business mistakes made in 2015 are we going to avoid in 2016? Which strategic plans are we going to adopt in 2016?
There are many more questions we can ask which are specific to our individual lives and businesses. We should ask those questions now that we are a little far away from 2016. And most importantly, we must answer them honestly and with all sense of purpose and responsibility. Now the next big thing is that we must answer these questions on paper.
Why is paper important? Because it shows our level of seriousness and also serves as a reference point as we journey through the year.
As business owners, we had written business plans before we started our businesses, will it hurt us if we write a fresh one every year as we go into a new phase in our businesses? If we don't want to get that elaborate, how about writing a strategic plan for 2016? Make it comprehensive and detailed. Capture all that is necessary. Put timeline and schedules. Allocate activities to each month. There are events in the coming year, how will your business take advantage of these events? Easter, Sallah, Workers day, children's day, democracy day, Independence day, Christmas and many more. What will your business be doing on these days? Be specific on your plans, do not make them ambiguous.
How about your staff? How many more are you adding in 2016?
Were their performances satisfactory in 2015? What changes will you carry out? What new responsibilities are you creating for them?
How about their welfare?
What of training? What of the indices for assessing their performances?
Are you increasing their wages in the coming year?
To what extend will you be doing that?
What impact will this have on your business, sales and profit?
What is your plan for self development? Which trainings will you be attending in 2016? Which conferences, workshops, seminars, or any self development programmes will you include in your training schedule?
If you don't know any upcoming events, you can research that quickly or alternatively, you can block up spaces within the year for these and when you find one you put it in the space provided? Self development is important. If you don't improve yourself your business will not grow.
What of your health? You have to be alive to run your business. Is your diet appropriate to your age and is it healthy? What is your schedule for medical check up? Do you think you should include exercise in your daily or weekly schedule? How about your social life?
Your relationship with your loved ones, what plans do you have in growing them and making them more harmonious? Do you have plans for holidays? You need to refresh and replenish your energy that is why holidays are good. Rest is key in our lives, we must include resting in our plans.
And now to the most important one. What is our plan in improving our relationship with our creator, God Almighty? There is no need to be religious about this. I believe most of us believe in a creator, or a supreme being. Unless the Lord watches over a city, the watchmen work in vain.
Our efforts in our businesses will be in vain if we do not recognise the place of God in them. God gives us the life to own a business and the wisdom to run it. We must acknowledge Him everyday and every time. Without Him we are nothing. In 2016, how will your relationship with your God be? If we desire to have success in 2016 then we must walk with God all the way.
