PRESS RELEASE.
PASSAGE OF VITAL HEALTH BILLS INTO LAW IN AKWA IBOM STATE.
The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) Akwa Ibom State branch has commended the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly(AKHA), under the able , pragmatic and vibrant leadership of Rt Hon Barr Onofiok Akpan Luke for the passage of two very important and vital health related bills into law.
The association appreciates the Speaker for being the lead sponsor of the bills for the ESTABLISHMENT OF THE AKWA IBOM STATE PRIMARY HEALTH CARE DEVELOPMENT AGENCY and the AKWA IBOM STATE HEALTH INSURANCE SCHEME AGENCY which were strongly advocated for by the Nigerian Medical Association NMA Akwa Ibom State branch.
The two bills when fully implemented, will make Health services more affordable, available and accessible to our people especially at the grassroot.
The laws will create an enabling environment for the implementation of the National Health Act and accessing the Basic Health Fund and Save One Million Lives (SOML) funds, to improve access to basic health package for Akwa Ibomites.
It will also enable the state access funds from NACA for the fight against HIV/AIDS bearing in mind that Akwa Ibom has the second highest HIV/AIDS prevalence in the country.
The laws will also make Primary Health Care(PHC) more effective and this plays a central role in the achievement of Universal Health Coverage (UHC), most of the 13 targets of the third Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and can contribute substantially to the 16 other SDGs.
The association also notes with great admiration the passage of 15 out of 40 people oriented bills in the 2nd legislative year of the 5th assembly. It clearly shows that the 5th Assembly is focused and truly the People’s Assembly.
Worthy of commendation for the role they played in this success story is the Chairman,AKHA Committee on Health, Hon Monday Eyo(Murray) and his committee members.Your efforts definitely did not go unnoticed.
The association also deeply appreciates the Governor,His Excellency, Deacon Udom Emmanuel for making a budgetary provision of 600million naira for the smooth take off of the scheme and therefore calls on the government to appoint competent hands to manage these agencies created by law for the maximal benefits of these agencies to be derived by the people of Akwa Ibom State.
The Nigerian Medical Association NMA Akwa Ibom State is proud of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly (AKHA) for the political will expressed in very concrete terms to improve the health and overall well being of our people through the passage of these important bills.
I assure you of our continuous support and cooperation in all efforts geared towards enhancing the health care delivery system.

Asteroid,
Now this is news! A very good one at that, I cant wait for its implementation. I wrote an article “Detained in hospital, the plight of mothers who cant afford bills”
It was a terrible Akwa Ibom experience.
It was a terrible Akwa Ibom experience.
If the Speaker can see it to the latter then and only then will I doff my cap for him.
Good step, good move, maternal and child mortality will drastically reduce.
Bug Ups to Onofiok Luke.
