BREAKING NEWS: Twitter suspends Nigerian militant group account

The Nigerian militant group, the Niger Delta Avengers, has been making its presence felt over the past few months by attacking oil installations.

It has often announced its attacks on Twitter - the most recent being at the weekend - but now its account has been shut down.

This is what you see if you try to visit it:

The Reuters news agency quotes a Twitter spokesman confirming the closure.

He would not give the exact reasons but said company policy on the suspension of accounts does include a "specific rule pertaining to violent threats... you may not make threats of violence or promote violence, including threatening or promoting terrorism".

A check on Monday morning revealed the development. The militant group has announced its attacks, which have negatively affected oil production in the country.

In series of tweets on Sunday morning, the group through the handle announced its attacks on oil facilities operated by Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, Chevron Nigeria Limited and Nigerian Petroleum Development Company.

The account was functional between 6:00am and 8:00am on Monday. Later checks however showed it had been suspended, The Punch reports.
The message on the social media platform read,
  “Account suspended!
This account has been suspended. Learn more about why Twitter suspends accounts, or return to your timeline.”

The spokesman of the Avengers, Mudoch Agbinibo, confirmed the suspension in a statement posted on Facebook. It added, “Notice! This is to bring to your notice that our twitter handle @www.twitter.com/@ndavengers has been suspended and our blog@www.nigerdeltaavengers disabled. “We use this medium to appeal to our fans and supporter to be very careful with any website or twitter claiming to represent us. We shall launch new accounts soon! We must continue the struggle!!!”
