-Sues For Responsible Journalism Practices
By Kendi JUMBO: The lawmaker representing Ukanafun State Constituency in the State House of Assembly, Hon. (Deacon) Otobong Jonathan Akpan has advocated for sports development and other recreational activities in schools operating in the state, describing sports and education as very essential ingredients towards the psychometric development of a child.
The lawmaker gave the advocacy penultimate Thursday during the 20th edition Inter-House Sports Competition of Western Annang Secondary Commercial Schools (WASCO) at Ukanafun headquarters.
He said, “I am most delighted by this beautiful sporting fiesta organized by WASCO, a school that has for the past decades continued to carve a niche of excellence for itself in terms of sports and qualitative academics. While commending the management and staff of this school under the able leadership of Mr. Felix Akpan for their collective successes brought to bear in this citadel of learning, I also want to encourage the athletes for their excellent out-play in both the field and track competitions. Again, I want to say that as usual, I will continue to partner with this school towards the development of sports, academics and other recreational activities, bearing in mind that, sports and education work together in the psycho-motor development of a child”.
Hon. Otobong Akpan who also served at the event as Patron of House ‘C’ (Hon. Otobong Akpan House) also assured the school that his representation will invest mostly in education amongst other vocational empowerment programmes. “Discovery and promotion of talents among the students and youths are top in my representation’s agenda. Our youths must be encouraged to advance in their God-given talents in line with the trending Dakkada philosophy in the state. These are my focus and hope for your future. Our hopes are alive!” the state lawmaker said.
Represented by one of his aides and the Supervisory Councilor for Agriculture in the local government’s Transition Committee, Hon. Shedrach Ekpo, the lawmaker called on other schools within the area to include sports and recreational activities in their curricula.
Meanwhile, the lawmaker has advised media professionals in the state to always be guided by the laws and ethics guiding journalism profession, rather than compromising to falsehood and other inimical acts capable of jeopardizing the integrity and goodwill of the profession.
Hon. Otobong who is the Chairman, House Committee on Special Projects, Monitoring and Implementation gave the advice yesterday when he played host to a section of the media professionals who paid him a courtesy/familiarity visit at his residence in Uyo.
He further charged them to be objective and responsible in their reportage as well as eschew from indulging in pull-him-down syndrome, character assassination and other pecuniary-motivated journalism practices which, he said, was trending in the profession.
