Former Super Eagles winger Emmanuel Amuneke has commended the Star Sixes Football Tournament initiative and hopes the Nigerian side wins the ‘Legends World Cup’ holding at the O2 Arena in London, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.
Amuneke spoke with Completesportsnigeria.com on his thoughts about the competition and his expectations for Friday’s game against Italy.
“The Star Sixes tournament is a welcome development. That’s the way things should be done,” the 1994 CAF African Footballer of the Year award winner told Completesportsnigeria.com on Friday.
“In Europe and most parts of the world, we have seen novelty matches, matches played for the sake of charity, but this one is a fantastic idea.
“I’m not part of our team due to other commitments, but I wish my friends and former colleagues luck in the competition.
“I really hope they can defeat Italy tonight. I don’t know about revenging our defeat to the Italians in USA ’94 World Cup. Even if the Nigerian side wins, it will not be the same as the main World Cup.
“But all the same, I wish them well. The organizers have done a marvelous work by bringing together former stars that have featured in the past World Cups,” Amuneke concluded.
Amuneke scored Nigeria’s goal in the Round of 16 defeat (2-1) to the Azzurri in ‘USA 94. Roberto Baggio scored the Italians’ two goals.
Nigeria’s game against Italy will kick off 9.15pm Nigerian time tonight.
Italy will parade players like Alessandro Del Piero, Fabrizio Ravanelli, Paulo Di Canio, Massimo Oddo, Stefano Fiore, Marco Delvecchio and Simone Barone.
