Akwa United picked their fifth away draw of the season after they were forced to a goalless draw by Abia Warriors at the Umuahia Township Stadium on Wednesday.
Both teams would have themselves to blame as they failed to convert their chances.
Abia Warriors’ Ndifreke Effiong and Sunday Adetunji missed glorious chances in the first half while Christian Pyagbara was guilty of not being precise when he was assisted by strike partner Musa Newman in the second half, having only the open net at his mercy.
Both teams began the game with great determination to win but they were able to cancel out each other in all the departments despite the poor nature of the pitch.
In an explosive opening to the game, Abia Warriors’ Shedrack Asiegbu, Anthony Okimmiri and Arinze Nwangwu’s efforts to dominate play in the midfield were well checked by the unstoppable force of Aremu Afeez, Alhassan Ibrahim and Ifeanyi Ifeanyi.
The first real chance of the match fell to Sunday Adetunji when he was put through by Anthony Okemmiri but the tall striker’s effort narrowly missed the target after beating Ojo Olorunleke in Akwa United’s goal.
The hosts had three more chances in the first half but Ndifreke Effiong and Sunday Adetunji were unable to make it count as the first half ended goalless.
Akwa United improved their game in the second half following some superb display by Alhassan Ibrahim, Ubong Friday, Musa Newman and Aremu Afeez.
The best chance of the game came in the 66th minute after Newman and Pyagbara outran Abia Warriors’ defense and found themselves in a two against one situation with Abia Warriors’ goalkeeper Agbor Ekoi.
Newman had the chance to score but chose to square the ball to Pyagbara with the goalkeeper clearly beaten but the striker tapped the ball off target, much to the disappointment of the traveling fans.
What appeared to be a minor injury forced Coach Abdu Maikaba to replace Alhassan Ibrahim and Ariwachukwu Emmanuel with Cyril Olisema and Counou Paterne respectively, while Gabriel Okechukwu came in for Christian Pyagbara in the closing stages of the game, but their efforts, most notable from Cyril Olisema lacked the power to trouble Ekoi as the two teams settled for a goalless draw.
The result ensures Akwa United remains 3rd on the log with 47 points from 29 matches and they will continue their quest for the NPFL title when they engage Nasarawa United on Sunday at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.
