Rooney Scores Super Goal, Lookman Shines As Everton Edge Kenya’s Gor Mahia

Rooney and Lookman

By Izuchukwu Okosi:

England youth international with Nigerian blood Ademola Lookman was in inspired form in a 45-minute performance on Thursday as English Premier League club Everton defeated Kenyan club Gor Mahia 2-1 at the National Stadium in Dar es Salam, Tanzania in a pre season friendly.

Wayne Rooney and Kieran Dowell were on the score sheet for Everton who recently signed Nigerian striker Henry Onyekuru from KAS Eupen before loaning him out to Anderlecht in the Belgian Jupiler League.

Rooney, making his second debut at Everton after 13 years at Manchester United, opened the scoring with a rising long-range shot from 30 yards out off a Lookman pass that left the Gor Mahia goalkeeper stranded in the 30th minute.

Lookman had looked like scoring earlier when he went on a run in the 23rd minute but his promising move was foiled by the Gor Mahia defence.

Jacques Tuyinsenge equalised for Gor Mahia barely two minutes after Rooney’s strike with a header off a corner kick.

A Dominic Calvin-Lewin goal for Everton was disallowed in the 63rd minute although television replays seemed to suggest he was not offside as ruled.

Dowell made it 2-1 with a left-footed volley in the 82nd minute from distance moments after rattling the crossbar from a freekick.
