The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) will bounce back very soon, stronger and reinvigorated – say two of its most eminent state governors.
Governors Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu State) and Nyesom Wike (Rivers State) on Sunday looked into the future of the PDP and described it as very bright.
They said that last week’s Supreme Court resolution of the protracted leadership crisis in the party has brightened the PDP’s horizon, declaring that the party will soon bounce back after its reconciliation process.
While Ugwuanyi said that the PDP’s doors were opened to renegade members, Wike said that the party will be vigilant in its reconciliation process to avoid the mistakes of the past.
Governor Ugwuanyi spoke yesterday when he attended the monthly meeting of the PDP in Udenu Local Government Area.
He charged members of the party to unite and work towards its progress.
The PDP in Enugu State has been effectively holding its monthly ward, local government and zonal meetings since the inception of the present administration in the state, with the participation of the party stakeholders, including all elected and public office holders both at the state and national levels.
Governor Ugwuanyi addressed the enthusiastic PDP supporters at the meeting – which witnessed the decamping of a large number of members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the PDP.
The APC members in the council, who decamped to the PDP, were led by Hon. Paul C. Okafor.
Ugwuanyi appealed that the doors of the PDP should be opened for all those who intend to join the party to do so.
He added that “the PDP is big enough to accommodate everybody.”
He congratulated the decampees and asked the PDP ward chairmen to mobilise for more people to join the party in their wards.
Earlier in his remark, the Udenu Local Government Chairman of the PDP, Hon. Emma Chima, expressed delight at the active participation of the party members, especially the governor, in the meetings of the party.
Chima said that the meeting was to celebrate the goodness of God and appreciate the good works of the governor, as well as receive the decampees into the PDP fold.
On behalf of the decampees, Okafor said that they were happy to join the PDP family in the state and requested that his followers be fully integrated in the affairs of the party.
On his part, Wike, at a separate forum, said that the PDP would be very vigilant as it embarked on its reconciliation process after the Supreme Court judgement.
Wike spoke at the interdenominational special thanksgiving service for PDP’s victory at the apex court at the Rivers State Ecumenical Centre in Port Harcourt.
Governor Wike said that the Supreme Court judgement saved Nigeria and “there is the need to thank God for the sustenance of multi-party democracy.”
“While we are reconciling, we must be vigilant. Nobody will take me unawares. Satan will never sleep. Satan will always find ways to cause havoc”.
According to him, the sacked chairman of the party, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, was an agent of the APC, adding that “woe betide any person who is a mole of the deadly party.”
Wike expressed gratitude to God for giving PDP leaders the wisdom to identify that with the emergence of Sheriff, the party was headed for doom and had to retrace its steps.
The governor said that Nigerians received the Supreme Court judgement with joy because the future of Nigeria rests with the PDP.
He said that the ruling APC, after winning the 2015 elections, has resorted to excuses and blame game instead of fulfilling the promises they made to Nigerians.
“Two years after the mandate, what is the situation? Excuses and blames without delivery. Look at how individuals took it upon themselves to destroy the party that gave them life”.
“PDP is the only party that is a household name in Nigeria. There is no unit in the country without a member of the PDP,” he said.
The governor said that going forward, Rivers State must get some positive returns on her contributions to the PDP.
“As we help you, you help us. If you don’t help us, we won’t help you. All of us must rise from our unit, ward and local government areas to mobilise people,” Wike charged the party members.
