Super Eagles’ 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers Group B opponents, the Chipolopolo of Zambia lost 3-1 to Zimbabwe in the final of the 2017 COSAFA Cup on Sunday in Rustenburg, South Africa, Completesportsnigia.com reports.
Zambia lost 2-1 to the Super Eagles in Ndola on matchday one of the 2018 World Cup qualifiers in October, 2016. They are currently third in the Group with one point after two rounds of matches, behind Group B leaders Nigeria (6 points) and Cameroon (2 points).
It is a record fifth COSAFA Cup title for Zimbabwe.
Zimbabwe got off to the perfect start as they took the lead through Knox Mutizwa in the second minute.
Zambia drew level in the 39th minute thanks to Lubinda Mundia.
In the 57th minute, Zimbabwe went 2-1 up following a goal from Talent Chawapiwa before Ocean Mushure scored the winner for Zimbabwe on 67 minutes.
Hosts of this year’s COSAFA Cup, Bafana Bafana of South Africa, who stunned the Super Eagles 2-0 in Uyo in a 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers in June, crashed out in the quarter-finals after losing 1-0 to Tanzania.
The Super Eagles other 2019 AFCON qualifier group opponent, Seychelles, were eliminated in the group stage after losing all their three group games.
Seychelles will host the Super Eagles on Matchday-two of the 2019 AFCON qualifiers.
This year’s COSAFA Cup which kicked off on June 25 had 14 teams taking part.
