Nigeria football Legend, Nwankwo Kanu has confirmed August 1-10 for the pioneer Basketball Clinic to be staged in Owerri, Imo State. The United Nations and FIFA Ambassador further disclosed that the clinic will take place at his Sports Center, near Imo State University Owerri. ‘Papilo’, as he is fondly called by admirers, hinted that two United States of America, USA, basketball coaches will be on ground to supervise the clinic with a view to spotting gifted basketball players who could then be shipped to the USA and possibly snapped by the NBA teams.
The former Arsenal of London forward and ex Super Eagles captain has been giving back to the society since after he survived his Heart surgery at Cleveland Hospital, USA, in 1997 which made him established the Kanu Nwankwo Heart Foundation which has treated over 500 kids suffering from same heart problem he suffered.
“It is not all and entirely about football. We’ve got to get our youths get a bite at other sports including basketball and that informs my decision to put together the basketball clinic,” states Nwankwo Kanu in a release made available to Completesportsnigeria.com. “Yes, South East Basketball Clinic is part of my giving back to the society disposition.
“You never can tell, there could be Michael Jordans and the rest amongst our teeming youths here. “Just that we want to give them opportunityto discover their talents and nurture them to greatness. “To do this, two great basketball coaches from United States of America, USA, will conduct the basketball clinic. We all know the position of USA in basketball. “It is my own little way of giving back to the society.”
Giving back to the society has been Nwankwo Kanu’s disposition having provided scholarships to students as well as giving cash prizes and gift items to some schools and students at the just concluded Children Day celebration which was held at his center in Owerri. Forms are available at the Nwankwo Kanu Sports Center, Owerri, with the four higher institutions in Owerri; Imo State University, Federal University of Technology, Imo State Polytechnic and Federal Polytechnic Nekede expected to participate in the basketball clinic.
