Despite being diagnosed with acute leukaemia, Super Eagles and Wolverhampton Wanderers first choice keeper, Carl Ikeme, insists he is not downcast, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.
Early this month, Ikeme, 31, returned “abnormal blood tests” during pre-season testing and further checks confirmed he has leukaemia, which is a form of blood cancer.
He has the acute leukaemia, which is curable but he has to put his playing career on hold for now to receive proper treatment.
Ikeme has since commenced chemotherapy following the diagnosis.
“Still happy, still grateful,” Ikeme wrote on Twitter on Saturday, attaching a photo of himself smiling in what appears to be a hospital bed.
Ikeme’s ailment means he is out of the Super Eagles’ 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Cameroon in August.
He is also not expected to return for the Eagles’ 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier away to Seychelles in March 2018.
