Former Nigeria’s U-23 international Sadiq Umar who scored for AS Roma in their previous International Champions Cup clash against Paris Saint Germain was an unused substitute in the Italians’ 3-2 win against Tottenham Hotspur at the Red Bull Arena in New Jersey early Wednesday morning (Nigerian time), reports Completesportsnigeria.com.
Diego Perotti (penalty), Cengiz Under and Marco Tumminello were on the scoresheet for AS Roma while Harry Winks and Vincent Janssen scored Spurs’ two late goals.
AS Roma’s first goal came in the 13th minute as Cameron Carter-Vickers blocked Radja Nainggolan’s cross with his hand. Perotti calmly converted the ensuing penalty.
Roma went close to scoring again four minutes later. Nainggolan broke with a counter attacking run and laid the ball to Gregoire Defrel but his shot went off target.
Harry Kane was bundled to the ground by Federico Fazio three minutes into the second half but the referee ignored penalty calls from the Spurs’ players.
Following the penalty denial frustration boiled over as Kane brought down Kostas Manolas afterwards. The game was temporarily halted as the match officials and the coaches of Spurs led by manager Mauricio Pochettino were involved in arguments.
Dele Alli and Harry Kane’s shots at short intervals at the hour mark were deflected thereby further frustrating the English side.
Youngster Under who came on as a second half substitute doubled the lead in the 70th minute as he latched on to a sloppy clearance to score with a close finish. It was the youngster’s debut goal for the Giallorossi.
The duo of Kane and Alli were substituted by Vincent Janssen and Georges-Kevin N’Koudou with fifteen minutes left on the clock,
Harry Winks pulled a goal back for the north London side in the 87th minute as he finished off a rebound from close range after a shot from Janssen had hit the foot of the post
Spurs made it 2-2 soon after with Janssen profiting from a great cross by N’Koudou but the English side’s joy was cut short as Marco Tumminello swept home a cross by Kevin Strootman two minutes after regulation time.
