ICC: Rampant Man City Thump Real Madrid In Five-Goal Thriller

By Izuchukwu Okosi:

Manchester City produced a world class second half display to defeat Real Madrid 4-1 at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in their International Champions Cup match Thursdaymorning (Nigerian time).

Nicolas Otamendi, Raheem Sterling, John Stones and Brahim Diaz were the scorers for City while Oscar Rodriguez grabbed a consolation for Spanish champions, Real Madrid.

The first half ended scoreless but it had moments of brilliance from players of both teams.

Gareth Bale had the  first chance of the game but his shot was just too wide to cause any harm.

Players from both sides had similar shooting opportunities at goal, but the goalkeepers of either side, Kaylos Navas and Elderson, were in good form as the likes of  Isco (Real Madrid),  Sergio Aguero (Manchester City), Karim Benzema (Real Madrid).

Manchester City defender  Otamendi finished off a rebound in the 52nd minute after Casilla who replaced Navas in Real Madrid goal could not gather John Stones’ initial header. This was after Dani Carvajal had been presented with a chance to put Madrid ahead.

Sterling’s industry since his second half entrance paid off as he slotted the ball cooly at the blind side of Casilla for City’s second goal in the 59th minute after he was set up by Kevin De Bruyne.

Stones made it 3-0 in the 67th minute. The Englishman swept the ball home from close range as Kevin De Bruyne found him in the Madrid six-yard box.

Pep Guardiola made some substitutions which also saw Nigerian-born Tosin Aderabioyo come on with eleven minutes left in the game in place of Otamendi.

Youngster Brahim Diaz further embarased  Zinedine Zidane and his players with a powerful shot at the edge of the box in the 82nd minute after exchange of passes with Patrick Roberts.

The young players from both teams made some impression in the game .

Madrid’s Oscar Rodriguez put the icing on the cake with an audacious dipping chip in the 90th minute with an assist coming from Marcus Llorente.
