The Speaker of Abia State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Chikwendu Kalu, has denied the alleged shooting of two officers of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) by his security aide.
According to reports, the Speaker’s wife was traveling to Aba on Saturday when the FRSC officers stopped the Sport Utility Vehicle she was traveling in along the Umuikaa/Aba-Port Harcourt Expressway.
The FRSC officers were alleged to have hit the vehicle with sticks when the driver ignored their signal to stop.
This, according to reports, led to a quarrel between the security aide of the Speaker’s wife, a personnel of the Department of State Services (DSS), and the FRSC officers leading to the alleged shooting.
But addressing newsmen yesterday in Umuahia, the Speaker denied the shooting of the FRCS officers contrary to media reports.
The Speaker, who roundly condemned the incident also said he was not at the scene of the incident contrary to reports that he stormed the scene with his security aides.
He said he was in his official residence in Umuahia when he received a distress call that his wife was having issues with some uniformed men on the highway.
According to him, he was also told that some of his security aides went to the scene to find out what happened but regretted that fracas later ensued between them which led to the unfortunate incident.
He said he understands the value of life and could not have ordered the shooting of the officers for whatever reason.
“ I am well informed to know that human life is sacred. I strongly condemn the overzealousness of the security agents whether army, DSS, police, FRSC or any security outfit.”
