Completesportsnigeria.com’s users have overwhelmingly backed Confederation of Africa Football (CAF) decision to expand the number of countries that will henceforth participate at the Africa Cup of Nations finals from 16 to 24.
Last Thursday, at the African Football Symposium in Rabat, Morocco, the executive committee of CAF decided to expand their highest-profile competition and move it from January/February to June/July.
The 24-team format will take effect at the 2019 AFCON in Cameroon.
In a poll conducted by Completesportsnigeria.com on our Twitter handle @CompleteSports with hundreds of votes cast, 96 per cent of the users backed CAF’s decision to increase the number of participating countries and host AFCON in June/July, while only four per cent were against it.
The Super Eagles lost 2-0 to South Africa in their opening Group E 2019 AFCON qualifier on June 10 in Uyo.
Libya are top of the group on three points and are followed by South Africa who also have three points while Seychelles are bottom with Nigeria in third place.
The expansion has boosted Nigeria’s chances of reaching their first AFCON since winning the title in 2013.
