The Chairman of Nigeria Union of Journalists, Akwa Ibom State Council, Elder Patrick Albert has called on the Nigerian Police Force to boost its work force by recruiting more into the Force- a gesture he said will improve the ratio of Policemen to citizens of the country.
Elder Albert gave the call today at the Akwa Ibom State Police Headquarters, Uyo when the Deputy Inspector General of Police coordinating South South Zone, DIG Emmanuel Inyang had an interactive session with stakeholders of the State.
The Chairman decried that the ratio of Police to a Citizen in Nigeria has fallen below the United Nations standard of 1:400, a situation he said has militated against the effective protection of lives and properties by the Force.
While suggesting the Police should review its policy of attaching security to persons as that will keep reducing the already limited ratio of police to individuals, the NUJ helmsman noted that attention should rather be given to providing efficient security to the public not individually so that there will be no need for such attachments.
He added ” We are concerned about the future effect of attaching Security personnel to individuals. We will rather want improvement in policing ratio. If we continue in providing security from persons to persons, we would have consumed the number of security personnel we have already ”
Elder Albert charged the NPF to improve its intelligence unit, improve upon the welfare of its personnel, be more civil and courteous in its operations and also protect those who volunteer to the Force intelligent report.
He also called on the force to work rigorously in unmasking those behind arms carried by some Fulani herdsmen suggesting that if the development is allowed to continue the relative peace experienced in South South may vanish.
Responding, the Deputy Inspector General of Police coordinating South South Zone, DIG Emmanuel Inyang noted that the police understands the need to recruit more into the Force.
He said recently, the Force has recruited and will continue to recruit more so as to meet with the Security needs of the Country.
He assured police commitment in protecting lives and property in consideration to human rights, rule of law and principles operational in a democratic society.
