Akwa Ibom people were over the weekend thrown into surprise as the Managing Director of NDDC, Obong Nsima Ekere shunned the burial ceremony of the late Paramount Ruler of Ibesikpo Asutan, Edidem Ita Etuk.
Late Edidem Etuk, a patriot and lawyer went home in a very colourful fashion witnessed by several prominent leaders, stakeholers and well-meaning indigenes of the state, including past and present governors and deputy governors.
However, the NDDC boss neither attended nor sent representative to honour the Ibesikpo Asutan departed royal father, replicating an action he is allegedly renowned in the event of tragedy and misfortune.
At the obsequies of another late monarch, and patriarch of the Ibibios Akwa Edidem Akpabio Udo Ukpa, Mr Ekere had been conspicuously missing, despite the proximity of their communities and the similar cultural ties they shared.
While the Nung Udoe family compound of Late Chief Ita Etuk was crowded with mourners, Mr Ekere chose to visit some royal fathers and political stakeholders with gifts.
The former deputy governor who recently started radio jingles launch on local radio stations in Uyo to signal his interest in the next governorship election, has been allegedly seen in publicity stunts consulting stakeholders and wooing them.
Chief Udo Edem, and indigene of Mkpat Enin told our reporter that Mr Ekere’s actions show he care little about human life, and would rather choose to relate with those he may need push his self-seeking political ambition.
“As you saw yesterday, all those who came for the burial forgot their political party inclinations and ethnic cleavages to show love and unity as Akwa Ibomites,” Edem said.
