The ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare held its 2017 Sensitization Campaign against Child Abuse, Child Abandonment,Child Labour and Baby Factory. The Three -Day Programme, on the theme :«End Child Exploitation and Abuse :Promote a Violence Free Society ”
took place in three senatorial districts in the state. The Sensitization campaign started on Tuesday 2, in Onna Local Government Council Hall, Wednesday 3, in Nsit Ubium Local Government Council Hall, climaxing on Thursday 4 in Essien Udim Local Government Council Hall respectively.
The event was an elaborate gathering attracting dignitaries and guests from all the nooks and crannies of the state.
The Honorable Commissioner, Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Dr Glory Edet in her address thanked the Governor, His Excellency Mr Udom Emmanuel for being children friendly and in making the state suitable and peaceful for children.
While expressing gratitude to God for the success of the campaign, she stated that the Child Rights Law is effectively implemented in Akwa Ibom State ,parents, guardians and caregivers who still perpetuate the evil acts of exploiting, abusing ,abandoning and stigmatizing of children as witches and wizards, thereby pushing them to roam the streets will be prosecuted.
Mr Tony from the Human Rights Commission spoke on the dangers and effects of Child Abuse which is very destructive to children and the society at large. The Human Rights Commission in collaboration with Child Protection Network presented three thousand copies Highlights of the Child Rights Law and Almanac, Abridged version of the Law and fliers to participants.
There were inspirational drama presentations from Onna People High School, Child Protection Network, Community Comprehensive Secondary School, Ndiya and Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare revealing the dangers and ills of Child Abuse, Child Labour and Child Trafficking.
The expose is a wake up call to parents, guardians and caregivers to join hands together in fighting against the menace of Child Abuse in Akwa Ibom State.
The Permanent Secretary of Women Affairs and Social Welfare Mrs Grace Stephen during the reactions and interactions sessions said mothers must ensure their children are loved and cared for.
The children who are victims and mainly enticed by promises of a better life but unfortunately end up in servitude in destinations far from home. The victims usually turn out traumatised, mentally unstable and social misfits in the society.
She also advised the clerics, Paramount Rulers and chiefs, youths, women leaders, stake holders and resource persons to be a team in eradicating Child Abuse in our state
Another guest speaker Mrs Bassey Eshiet in her paper presentation titled :The Role of Parents in a Child’s Upbringing ; admonished parents and caregivers to train and mentor children with love and in God’s principles.
She said the battle for a child’s heart is fought early as parents who fail to gain firm control over their young children lose instantiated grip they have as the children get older and smarter, children once accustomed to getting their own way through bad temper, soon learn how to manipulate and even bully their parents in front of others through their emotional outbursts.
She further stated that a research shows that a child from ages 0-6 retains ten percent of what he hears, fifty percent of what he sees and ninety percent of what he participates in.
Before the campaign came to an end, the honourable commissioner Dr Glory Edet speaking on Baby Factory warned the traditional birth attendants to desist from illegal buying and selling of babies as commodities and advised women who find it difficult to conceive follow the correct processes of adoption through the ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare. She also promised they will not relent in efforts of working to improve the quality of life of children, women, physically challenged and other vulnerable groups.
