…as Gov Udom partners Google, Fed govt in job creation

In line with the determination of Governor Udom Emmanuel to create jobs for the teeming unemployed youths, a total of 3,627 Akwa Ibom youths drawn from the 31 local government areas in the state are to be trained on digital marketing. They will be exposed to money spinning opportunities that abound in the digital space.
The one day intensive training exercise which is slated for Thursday, will hold simultaneously at six training centres across the three Senatorial districts of the state. They include, Ibom e-library and College of Education, Afaha -Nsit for Uyo senatorial district. The Obio Akpa campus of Akwa Ibom State University in Oruk Anam, and the Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic, Ikot Osurua, is to serve as the designated training centres for Ikot Ekpene Senatorial district, while the Ikot Akpaden campus of the State University in Mkpat Enin and Maritime Academy, Oron will play host to trainees in Eket Senatorial district.
Breaking the news during a media briefing with some members of the press on Monday, the Commissioner for Science and Technology, Dr. Nse Udo Essien disclosed that the training Programme which is a brainchild of the Office of the Snr. Special Assistant to the President on Sustainable Development Goals, SDG’s is jointly sponsored by Akwa Ibom State government and the federal government. He further disclosed that ICT giant, Google and Mind the gap(another ICT firm) will train beneficiaries.
Speaking on the benefits of the training programme, the Science and Technology boss explained that the training which is is primarily intended to bridge the digital gap, provide skills, enable digital transfer among other benefits, would add value to the youths in several ways.
“The programme is designed to offer unemployed youths an opportunity to gain knowledge on the basics of digital training. In this present age, the world is going digital, and any outfit or organization that does not go digital would lose out. The training programme will prepare the youths to impact their community positively through the application of digital world”.
We want to move them from awareness to proper knowledge. We want to use this platform to implement sustainable development goals”.
Dr. Essien listed the requirement that qualifies one to benefit from the training to include, a minimum of OND certificate, a lap top or a smart phone. He said at the expiration of the one day training, a platform will be created for further online training.
“Micro and Small Enterprises are taken to the digital space. A lot of the Small and Micro Enterprises across the globe do not utilize digital tools for their profit. This online training will enrich their knowledge”.
On the selection process, Dr. Essien stated that 117 youths per local government area were selected across the 31 local government councils in the state. He said local government Chairmen and Ward leaders were involved in a selection process Coordinated by the Ministry of Youths and Sports.
Also speaking, a representative of Google, Mr. Bassey Enwang said his organization was delighted to partner Akwa Ibom State and the federal government in facilitating the training.
Also Reacting, the Permanent, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Science and Technology, Mrs. Stella Etuk Akpan commended the government for keying into the development programme, assured of the Ministry’s commitment towards the success of the training programme.
The Commissioner also fielded questions from Journalists during the briefing.
