OUR SILENCE IS NO LONGER GOLDEN: An Urgent Demand For A Constituency Briefing In Uyo State Constituency

Rt. Hon. Monday Eyo Okon
Member, Representing Uyo State Constituency,
Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly,
Udoma Udoma Complex,
Uyo
Akwa Ibom State

Honourable,

Recently, I have been using this medium to convey the content of my thought in line with the yearnings of the people of Uyo State Constituency bordering on a number of salient issues of worthy representation in the State legislature. Hopefully, you would not deny the acknowledgement of receipt of the letters. Thank you for sparing time to digest the opinions expressed through them.

Understandably, I am convinced that you would not claim ignorant of the fact that in modern democracy, evident and effective representation in government is a sine qua non, just as accountability is a panacea for marginalisation. Therefore, when accountability is technically, religiously, politically and calculatively avoided, dearth of good leadership and poor governance is entrenched.

In this light, and in consideration of the collective interest of the people, no room shall be allowed for such deliberate act of neglect.
It is worrisome and awful to observe in disquiet that you are gradually interring into history as a legislator whose tenure in office witnessed no organisation of requisite briefing session for people of your constituency and empowerment exercise as practiced in other lands and climes. Please note, that this seeming nonchalant attitude of yours is capable of thwarting His Excellency, Gov. Udom Emmanuel’s laudable plans and his 2019 Project in Uyo Ł.G.A.

Sir, you raised the dwindled hopes and sagging morale of indigent students when you promised during the electioneering process that you were planning to launch a scholarship scheme for students of your constituency, if elected. Obviously, at this time, you have not given a student a dime, let alone a grant. Indeed, this is shameful.

From various sources, I have gathered that you control and manage the affairs of Ibom Plaza and Akpanandem Market, which were established to generate revenue for the immediate community. From the foregone, it has become conspicuous that the income generated from here is used as your personal asset. It is widely believed that you keep custody of the sanitation proceeds. The Uyo people have the right to know the truth and they are demanding for clarification and accountability.

However, although we applaud your magnanimity in donating about 50 chairs to a school. But one would still wonder if such is an achievement, being that some private individuals with no allowances are doing better in areas of empowerment and community development.

My Honourable representative, it is visible to the blind and audible deaf that your predecessor, Hon Edwin Joseph built markets in his ward (ward 7), Useh Effot. In his wisdom, he handed it over to his people. Also, he built one in Etoi and at Ikono. For about two(2) years in office, what have you done which would be documented as your legacy(ies)?

Sir, we are usually shamed, articles on newspapers (especially the THE INK NEWSPAPER) constantly refer to you as one of the sleeping lawmakers in the State House of Assembly. This to you may seem an ordinary criticism, but to us, it’s an insult to the good people of Uyo whose mandate you hold in trust.

Sir, perhaps you have done something worthy of mentioning not yet known to us, please, kindly publish in the local or national dailies for all and sundry to see. Please, don’t be a silent performer. I am not saying you should blow your trumpet. But, however, show the world your level of stewardship and the quality of an Uyo person.

Thank you!

Yours sincerely,
Ekemini James
