REIGNERS COLLAPSE: OPEN LETTER TO SPEAKER, AKWA IBOM STATE HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY

Rt. Hon. (Barr) Onofiok Luke,
Honourable Speaker AKHA
Udo Udoma Complex.
08/02/2016.

A CALL FOR BAN ON THE USE OF UNCOMPLETED/ UNDEVELOPED BUILDING FOR PUBLIC EVENTS IN AKWA IBOM STATE.

No doubt whatsoever would I claim ignorant of the fact that your esteemed office has been inundated with varied complaints about the way and manner some man-made disasters and mishaps have been happening in our dear state; which has caused worries to many families in recent times.

At the vicissitude of this juncture, permit to laud the ingenuity of the Honorable Speaker for intelligently and harmoniously legislating over the affairs of the State House of Assembly thus far. Mr. Speaker, you have etched your name on gold in the sand of time regarding your leadership dexterity in the hallowed chambers. May posterity be fair to you. God bless you.

As seen from the introductory paragraph above, I write to convey to you and your entire colleagues my concern and that of the vast majority of AkwaIbom indigenes at home and in diaspora regarding the event of recent happenings with particular reference to the collapsing of the uncompleted church auditorium where scores died and our amiable governor, His excellency, (Deacon) Udom Emmanuel miraculously escaped death.

Mr. Speaker, I do not wish to narrate that gloomy incident that happened on that fateful day. But, however, recall that our indigenes at home and abroad; and many Nigerians were greeted with a piece of news that murdered joy on the 10th of December, 2016 on the day of the consecration of pastor Akan Week. The memory of that evil occurrence has remained fresh and bitter in our existence. Rain has ceased drizzling from the sky, rather, it continues to shower from the eyes of families and friends of those that lost their lives in that accident. Since then, fears have become the daily companion of many having social and public events in AkwaIbom State using uncompleted facilities (buildings).

It is in the light of the foregoing that I sincerely write to appeal or rather request the Assembly under your superintendent for the promulgation and enactment of stringent legislations prohibiting the use of half-done or underdeveloped buildings/ facilities for public events in the state.

I need not be told how Mr. Speaker and the whole legislators value the lives of our people and I am absolutely convinced that the Assembly under your speakership would do her very best in considering the plea of this open letter.

I beg to remind Mr. Speaker that had it been that there were Acts of Assembly bothering on the demand of this letter, the catastrophe that happened at the bishopric consecration of Akan Week in the half-finished Reigners’ auditorium would not had happened. It is intrinsically on this incontrovertible fact that this request once again hinges on.

Experience has shown that man oftentimes does not learn from the lessons of historical events; but he only remember the date and the cause of the events. Ours should not be classified into such category. A stitch in time saves nine they said. We should not die in avoidable circumstances.

A copy of this letter should also be sent to your colleagues in the House for their perusal and necessary actions.
Sir, thank you very much for sparing time to read this open letter. I expect your prompt consideration as usual.

God bless Mr. Speaker.
God bless Akwa Ibom State.
Dakkada!

Yours must trusted,
Ekemini James
(Concerned citizen)
