West Itam Unity Cup: No fewer than 5,000 fans billed for final

West Itam Unity Cup: No fewer than 5,000 fans billed for finalfter weeks of incredible football, renewed rivalry and quest for bragging rights, the 2016 edition of West Itam Unity Cup will reach a crescendo on Sunday January 8.

No fewer than 5,000 fans are expected to witness the final matchday, which will feature two arch rivals, Atai Ibiaku Itam and Mbak Itam III.

The game billed for the West Itam Sports Center, opposite NNPC Mega Station, will  kick off by 4pm.

To book a place in the final, Atai Ibiaku Itam defeated Ikot Ekang Itam in the semi final, while Mbak Itam III edged off Ikot Ebom Itam.

The competition regarded as the most consistent community organised football competition, has ran for almost three decades (28 years) without hitches, thus leading to its being referred to as a model for grassroots sports development in the state.

The soccer fiesta has produced top quality footballers for the state and country in the mould of: Ezekiel Bassey(Enyimba & Super Eagles); Emem Eduok (Turkey); Israel Okon (Turkey); Godwin Inamoto (FC Ifeanyi Ubah); Abasiama Michael Abasiama (Bafana); Nicholas Joseph and a host of others

According to the organizers, the decision to host this year's final at the Itam Sports center is to appreciate the laudable gesture of the State Governor, Mr Udom Emmanuel, whom they say is committed to development of Youths and Sports in the State, by setting up 10 sports centers across the State, with Itam center being the first to be commissioned.

Governor Emmanuel commissioned the Itam Sports Center on the occasion of his first 100 days in office as Executive Governor of the state on May 29, 2016.
