Legionnaires call for decentralization of powers on approval for pension leftover

The Nigerian Legion Ibesikpo Asutan Area Council has called for  decentralization of authority for payment of bank leftover pension allowance of deceased legionnaires to their next of kins.

The area council chairman, Major Anthony Adams in an address at the grand finale of this year's Armed Forces Remembrance day celebration in Nung Udoe said the request was based on directive from banks.

"It is difficult for family members of fallen heroes to access leftover pensions, this is because banks are currently demanding the clearance of bank certificate from probate registry with the military pensions board before they can be treated".

Major Adams whose address was read by his deputy, Captain Akaninyene Ekukinam said the military pensions board should empower divisional headquarters of the Nigerian Army to issue such clearance.

"Interface experience with families of deceased legionnaires show that most next of kins are deficient in economy and experience to travel to Military Pensions Board at Abuja".

The legion chairman applauded the Ibesikpo Asutan transition committee chairman Barr. Ukana Udofia for honouring the legionnaires.

The chairman Ibesikpo Asutan transition committee Barr. Ukana Udofia called on Nigerians  to make sacrifices for the sustenance of peace in the country.

Udofia spoke on the theme,  "Efforts of our heroes past shall never be in vain", regretted that Nigerians did not run their affairs in a manner that shows commitment to the solemn covenant made in the national anthem.

"It is time Nigerians arose from hypocrisy and pursue the course of peace. People have laid down their lives in wars for us to enjoy peace yet some others are on a daily basis creating issues that will make the peace we are enjoying to elude us.

"On this occasion, we must  remind ourselves that we must sacrifice for peace. Wherever we are, we should endeavour to do things that show that we appreciate the labour of our heroes past", he said.

Udofia urged Nigerians to work diligently for  the sustenance of peace which the legionnaires fought for, adding that Nigeria cannot achieve much if her citizens do not cherish the peace fought and won by the Armed Forces.

The Armed Forces remembrance day celebration in Ibesikpo Asutan featured the inspection of guard of honour mounted by legionnaires by the transition chairman, launch of the 2017 Armed Forces emblem, laying of wreath at the tomb of the unknown soldier, 21 gun salute and blowing of the last post.
