AKHA appropriations c'tee lauds AKWAPOLY management

The Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly committee on appropriations and finance has applauded management of the Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic Ikot Osurua for working to improve the performance rating of the institution.

Chairman of the committee, Usoro Akpanusoh gave the commendation today when the Rector of the Polytechnic, Dr. Israel Affia led management team to defend the institution's fiscal proposals for 2017 at the House of Assembly complex, Uyo.

Akpanusoh said the high rating of the Polytechnic should be maintained.

"I charge you to do everything within your powers to maintain the integrity of the Polytechnic".

Deputy chairman of the committee and member representing Ibiono Ibom, Barr. Ime Okon said the House of Assembly was proud of the rating of the Polytechnic under Affia.

"We are proud that AKWAPOLY has been rated second most sought after Polytechnic despite the distractions. Keep on doing your best. Ensure that no programme loses accreditation".

Rector of the Polytechnic, Dr. Israel Affia had appealed to the committee to up-change the allocation for the accreditation of programmes in the Polytechnic in 2017 to N250 million, from N50 million approved in the proposals submitted by the governor.

Affia, a Doctor of Laws, said more programmes would be due for re-accreditation this year.

"Some of our programmes were due for accreditation last year, but due to paucity of funds we could not do that. The NBTE have been standing by for re-accreditation. This year more programmes will be due for presentation, that is why we are appealing for increase in that proposal".

A total of N226,520 million was proposed for capital expenditure for the Polytechnic in the 2017 fiscal estimates.

However, the Rector said the amount meant for procurement of equipment for Engineering workshop, and Mass Communication department was meager.

Affia called on the government to approve recruitment into vacant positions in the Polytechnic, saying that the institution spends a greater chunk of her internally generated revenue to pay part-time lectures.

"We have a lot of vacancies in the Polytechnic. Members of staff have retired, and some have be transferred, and we need to replace them. It is not in the best interest of the Polytechnic to spend N6million every semester on salaries for part-time lecturers".

He said the Polytechnic hopes to introduce new programmes once funds are made available.

Dr. Affia was accompanied by the Deputy Rector, Architect Iniobong Ukpong, Registrar Dr. Mary Nda, Deputy Bursar Mr. Ekong Ituen and Librarian Mr. Okon Idiok.
