AKAN OKON: SETTING THE PACE IN HOUSING AND SPECIAL DUTIES.

BY Bokime Asuquo
If at least, one statement of fact is being made about the current administration of Governor Udom Emmanuel, it is the fact that there is a wave of unprecedented achievements currently being experienced in the State. This has only been possible through the forthrightness, efficiency, dedication, effectiveness and sincerity of members of Governor Emmanuel's Leadership Team.

Undoubtedly, Mr. Akan Okon, the new Commissioner for Housing and Special Duties in Akwa Ibom State, a pragmatic, focused, and result-oriented chief servant, who has remained resolute in his commitment to the drive of the current administration.

His deployment to the Ministry of Housing, Urban Renewal and Special Duties is timely, and the Ministry he oversees is set to witness a face lift, especially, as it concerns Housing.

Already, the Honourable Commissioner has set the ball rolling, within one week, he has inspected some key projects in the state.

His first port of call, few days after the inauguration, was the Ibom International Airport, where he embarked on an inspection tour of major facilities at the Airport.

The facilities inspected were the Commercial Extension of Demotic Building, Announcement Room and Airlines Offices. He also inspected the ticketing Hall, Departure and Arrival Halls, Apron Control Office, as well as Security Points.

Speaking shortly after the inspection, Mr Okon expressed satisfaction over the proper maintenance of facilities at the Ibom International Airport. He however directed the immediate repairs of some nonfunctional facilities at the Airport. This he said, must be carried out within a period of 14 days.

So far, the Commissioner has met with the Board of Members of Ibaka Deep Sea Port to chat the way forward towarfs the full actualisation of the the project. Recently, he led a team of experts to the site of the Sea Port and assured that the project will be completed in no distant time.

Notably, the project in no time would be completed and will go a long way to complementing the industrialisation and job creation policies of the Governor Udom Emmanuel's led administration.

Mr Okon, accompanied by the site Engineers of Ashdene Group, also inspected the site of Government Estate in Ibiaku Eshiet, Uruan Local Government Area, where he promised a speedy completion of the project.

He applauded efforts by the State Government under Governor Udom Emmanuel in providing affordable houses for Akwa Ibom people and noted that the project when completed, will go a long way in solving accommodation problems among citizens of the area.

Through his efforts, some minor cases bothering on compensation for the host communities have been settled and work at the Estate is expected to be devoid of all forms of hitches.

It is pertinent to state here that the Governor's lofty dreams and campaign promises for the people of Akwa Ibom State will be made manifest, with the take off speed employed by the new housing commissioner who has the requisite skills to help interpret the Governor's vision in the area of housing.

Perhaps, that was why the Permanent Secretary in his led ministry, Mrs Valarie Obot, during the Special Fellowship/Inaugural Meeting of the ministry recently, described him as "a complete politician" and a "dyed-in-the-wool professional, with strong managerial skills of men and resources."

As noted already, Mr Okon will ensure a robust implementation and delivery of the state’s turnkey projects through efficient management and innovative strategies for socio-economic benefit and transformation of the state with supporting structures and graceful interface into the mainstream economy of the state.

His appointment as Commissioner for Housing, Urban Renewal and Special Duties is worthwhile as he will utilise his experiences in many years of service in the public sector to capitalize on available potentials in reaching challenging management opportunities for the creation of additional value to the development of Akwa Ibom State and Nigeria.

All what Okon needs is a conducive atmosphere for him to display his professionalism in the service to the state, for when he delivers, Governor Udom Emmanuel  has delivered and that implies a better Akwa Ibom.
