The President General of Oron Union, Chief Dr. E.E.B.Edunam has described Oro Nation as a blessed and richly endowed land which is worthy of being identified with by indigenes and non indigenes alike.
He made the assertion yesterday in the University of Uyo while addressing a cross section of students of Oro extraction studying in the University of Uyo as part of Oro Day 2016 in the institution. He thanked the students for showcasing Oro's rich culture to the University community.
The former Commissioner and Lecturer admonished the students to pursue academic excellence. He lauded a former Minister of Lands and Housing, Dr(Mrs)Akon Eyakenyi,former Commissioner for Information,Hon.Chris Abasieyo, Bishop of Anglican Communion, Uyo Diocese, His Lordship,Rt. Rev. Asukwo Antai and other dignitaries for identifying with the students.
He also said that since his assumption of office as President General of Oron Union,he has toured different campuses of institutions of higher learning for the singular purpose of sensitizing students of Oro extraction on the need to identity with Oron Union in particular and Oro Nation as a whole.
Also speaking,Dr Akon Eyakenyi pledged her support for the students. She specifically advised the newly crowned Miss Akpakip Oro in the University of Uyo on the need to maintain and exhibit high morals during and after her reign.
Dr Eyakenyi,who is also Chairman, Governing Council of Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic,Ikot Osurua warned against indecent dressing among female students.
Also addressing the crowd,gubernatorial aspirant in the 2015 General Election, Hon Chris Abasieyo described culture as the driver of science and technology. He advised the students to love one another and lauded them for flying the culture flag on campus.
He debunked the generally held belief that Africa has contributed nothing to global development. He posited that while the western world contributes science and technology, Africa contributes arts and culture towards the advancement of humanity.
In his welcome speech,the Eti Oro(VI) University of Uyo,HRM Edet Eyo described this year's Oro Day in the institution as special because they had to braved an extremely biting economic situation in the country to hold it.
He listed the achievements of his Council to include :
A. Production of Akpakip Oro branded exercise books
A. Production of Akpakip Oro branded exercise books
b.Presentation of textbooks to Oro students in the institution to aid effective learning
c.Attraction of scholarships to 10 students of Oro origin in the University of Uyo.
d.Successful election of the first NAAKISS President, UNIUYO of Oro extraction after over 20 years of agitation etc.
He lamented that the student leadership was incapacitated by lack of funds and appealed to the University authorities to consider "the introduction of payment of dues by all students from the three major ethnic groups of Oro, Ibibio and Annang to aid in students' administration.
Other dignitaries who graced the event were the immediate past Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs,Hon.Victor Antai, former AHTA ORO in the institution, Barr E.O. Oboho,Senior Lecturer in the University of Uyo,Dr Sunny Offong.
The highpoints of the colourful events were the launch of the maiden edition of THE BOND Magazine,the reception of Freshers and installation of Miss Abigail Okon Job as the first Miss Akpakip Oro in the institution.
Members Representing Oron Federal Constituency and Mbo State Constituency as well as Chairman, Transition Committee, Udung Uko Local Government Area were represented.
