The member representing Ikot Abasi/Eastern Obolo State Constituency in the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly,Rt.Hon.Uduak Odudoh has advocated for the establishment of more police stations in his constituency to help combat the crime rate as well as responding effectively to their criminal forays.
The lawmaker made this known to the house coming under order III rules 1&2 of the standing order with the motion HAM 78 captioned"RE-ESTABLISHMENT OF THE POLICE STATIONS IN EKPENE ENIN-UKAN VILLAGE,EDEMAYA CLAN AND ESENE VILLAGE,IKPA NUNG ASAN CLAN, ALL IN IKOT ABASI"
Informing the house, the lawmaker said for an area that host Akwa Ibom State owned Ibom Power Plant which is a 250MW Open Cycle Gas Turbine(OCGT)power station and the Federal Government owned Aluminium Smelter Company, which makes it prone to militancy and high sea piracy, there is a great need for adequate police presence.
In his words "There is a great need of adequate police presence in the area to combat incidences of crime, protect public facilities and private lives and property, prevent disturbances of private and public peace and facilities the arrest or prosecution of offenders"
Hon.Odudoh lamented the presence of just one police station comprising of less than 70 police officers to police the area as grossly inadequate to cope with the constantly rising crime rates prevalent in a major city like Ikot Abasi and sorrounding coastal settlements.
"For the mere fact that there is only one police station in the local Government Area hampers expedicious mobilization and deployment in times of crisis or emergence" he maintained.
Sequel to the motion being suported by the member for Ibesikpo Asutan State Constituency,Rt.Hon.(Elder)Aniekan Uko,the speaker Rt.Hon.(Barr.)Onofiok Akpan Luke thanked the Ikot Abasi/Eastern Obolo lawmaker for the timely motion and accordingly commited the motion to the House Committee on Youth,Sports and Security for further legislative action.
