A BRIEF PROFILE OF FORMER INSPECTOR-GENERAL OF POLICE, LATE SIR ETIM OKON INYANG (RTD.)

Sir Etim Okon Inyang (GCON, NPM, KJW), Ikpoto ORO was born on 25th December, 1931 in Uko Akpan, Enwang, Mbo Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.

Sir Inyang was enlisted into the Nigerian Police Force on 1st October, 1949 as a Constable and rose through the ranks to the highest exalted position of Inspector General of Police in 1983 to succeed Sunday Adewusi and was succeeded by Muhammadu Gambo Jimeta in 1986.

He earlier served as Commissioner of Police in Kano and Old Bendel States. He was appointed Vice Chairman of the Constitution Review Committee in 1987. He facilitated the establishment of the Traffic Warden Scheme in 1974 and police Medical Services.

He also initiated the establishment of Police Training College in Oji, Rivers and Maiduguri, as well as the Detective College in Enugu. His department streamlined and handled all courses of the Nigeria Police within and outside the country.

In order to strengthen the civic bonds of the Police, he initiated the Police Community Relations Committee programme (PCRC).

He died on 26th September, 2016 at the age of 85.
