By Ndiana Ekpenyong| The Secretary to Akwa Ibom State Government, Sir Etekamba Umoren has charged the Rotary Club to ensure a more aggressive marketing of its relentless service to humanity.
Sir Etekamba Umoren gave the charge when a collection of its members led by the District Governor in-charge of eleven States within the South-South and South East, Rotarian Akabom Enebong paid him a courtesy call at Government House, Uyo.
Sir Umoren who was reacting to an allegation of lukewarm attitude towards the activities of Rotary Club by public officials maintained that the public should be made to know the many good works of the club citing the circumstance of how he became a Rotarian as a case of such marketing.
The Secretary to the State Government narrated how his school son ascended to the height of a District Governor of the Club at Trans-Amadi and how he invited him to grace the occasion.
The SSG said that it was at that event where he was also honoured that he learnt a lot about the humanitarian services of the Rotary Club.
Sir Umoren observed that prior to then, he like many others used to see Rotary as an elite group without any knowledge of the many roles the club is playing to alleviate the human condition.
He commended the Club for many of the life-touching programmes like the eradication of Polio and the floor to desk at Apostolic Primary School, Ifa, which the club has embarked upon and made meaningful strides.
He particularly lauded the Club’s partnership with government to kick out polio noting that the efforts have recorded commendable result by saving the lives of children from that scourge.
The District Governor, Rotarian Akabom Enebong who led a large delegation of Rotarians said he was on tour of the various units of the eleven States which he presides over. He thanked the SSG for the privilege of his audience especially in the area of keeping to time, which according to him is not common with government functionaries stating that Sir Umoren has upheld the good qualities of a Rotarian.
The District Governor who graduated in 1972 from the University of Ibadan and joined the Rotary Club in 1987 lauded the Secretary to the State Government for identifying with Rotary Foundation and consequently joining cause to fulfill the objective of the body which is service to others.
Rotarian Akabom asserted that through the coordinated efforts of Rotarian Foundation, Nigeria unlike Pakistan and Afghanistan has been removed from the list of countries that are polio endemic but lamented that the few isolated cases of Polio are in the North East which the organization cannot access due to insurgency by the Boko Haram conundrum.
The District Governor charged those in governments to be concerned with the fight against polio maintaining that as long as there is a child who is a victim of polio, all others are potential victims.
